Life's next step for me. The power to visualize [pics]

So lots of guys have asked me questions / advice on how I have gotten to certain places in life.
There are many ways, but for me it starts with visualizing what you want. I dont care if it is in the gym or in your career.

So I am getting ready to turn 50 and in 2 years it wont matter where we live. (dont have to worry about school districts). Oldest is in first year of college and son has a couple years. I have talked it over with the wife and we are thinking of building again. This time on 15-20 acres away from everyone.

We are lucky that we are on 3 in the middle of our little city. Lucky enough to find a 3 ac lot at right time and right place in 2015. I dont think we will have any trouble selling current home. It is pretty well known in our area. Just one of those homes that people know it because it is a little different. But to get 20 acres puts us out a little further which we are OK with since we are not doing school drop off and pick up etc.

SO....I have talked my wife into exploring a more modern design. When I designed out current home, I had to scale the modern back for her to be happy. But she has given me the green light to explore my creativity.

This is how things start for me. I need something to picture and then make it happen. Not sure what this will lead to, but for me, this is how it starts. This is a few days of brain storming.....

ID, is that is representative of your taste, look at high end coastal properties in Spain.

They are much better architecturally than the crap you see in California.

I do. I have been modeling and rendering going back 15+ years. But that is actually just the real time ray trace in the software I use.
But I also use TwinMotion and Lumion. I used to use Lumion for a long time, but have migrated to twin motion which uses Unreal engine. They are set up for architectural modeling.

Cool. I draw inspiration from lots of places. Just exploring different ideas. When I am drawing, I am also thinking the building, construction and budget aspects. Removing those restrictions, the sky really is the limit. But for my wife and I, this will be an opportunity to downsize, and I dont want to be to over the top expense side on construction. My goal is to build this and then have enough left over from the sale of our current home to buy and oceanfront home.

Yea. More than just the models. In life (for me) this is how I make decisions. For me, I have to see what it is that I want or want to do. Once the decision is made, it gets done. I am not sure yet what we are doing since it is hard to complain about our current home. Just exploring the idea if I want to build another.

This is kinda cool. Going back over 20 years. I designed my first home for myself and at 28 I built it. Renderings were much more crude back then. This was a little stupid. 8900 heated on 3 levels with an INSANE stair case that I have not seen topped even to this day.

Then about 5 years ago I did this design, and then we built it.

I model in black and white without textures. As for me the design is about space and the interaction of that space with light. Textures are a distraction. Once I am happy with the design and layout, I add in the textures.

Mirin. I’d highly recommend 40 acres if you can swing it. I’m on 20 now and wish I had 20 more. Perfect size lot for playing and privacy.

Wow! Cool design.

I'd love to be able to design and build my own home someday.

Working now towards getting into a PhD program in operations research or econ and then joining industry. Have felt a bit disheartened lately since it seems like everyone in college is focused on wasting time, even at my school which is considered elite.

Looking forward to actually starting my life tbh, I don't like feeling out of place with my peers.

Mirin creativity and visionary skills. srs. Looks amazing as well as your current house.

1 thing I know I'm not good at is something like this. The fact someone can visualize a home, then create a model of it, and then bring it to life....blows my mind. I just don't quite have that artistic side like this.

As I mentioned last time we talked about houses, we bought the current one at just about the first fix stage and then did 7 months more work on it.

My wife projected managed it for the 7 months (5 whilst pregnant and 2 with a newborn), as it is more her skill set (she is a civil engineer). I haven't actually watched her work very often and watching her run a site with over 60 tradies on it was educational.

We actually moved in with it unfinished. We had the master suite, the study, one of the staircases and one of the kitchens fully finished, so that we could move in, and then the rest of it was built around us.

Do notmess with a pregnant woman on a building site. If you think you have seen them nesting before, it just takes things to a whole new level.

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

That is awesome! Nothing better than a good woman! I am amazed at my wife to this day. We have built a couple homes together. That is a roller coaster of so many things.... If your marriage can survive that, it can anything!

I really enjoy working with my wife. No regrets here. My wife has made it possible for me to achieve what I have in life. She motivated me at many corners to be a better man.

Looks awesome but it looks like it will echo pretty bad inside. Mine was similar and was irritating.

Buy some contemporary art.

If you buy the large frameless pieces and hang them, along with some contemporary chandeliers, it kills the echoes.

If you have the right software, you can model how the sounds travels, echoes etc and adjust the ceiling shape before you build it.

Echo's are more a result of having all hard finishes. Lived in some open homes before. Here are a few pics of the inside of the home I built 20 years ago.

Current living room is below those.

I am not the biggest fan of super high volume ceilings any longer (for me). Just my personal taste. When I was younger, I wanted 'wow'. Now I dont care about drama in a plan. I want comfort and something that fits the way we live.

The current proposed drawing has only 15' clgs. Our current home (bottom pic) has 14' clgs in the living room. No real concerns about echo even with the very open spaces. It is more a function of furnishings.

That's why you put art on the walls. A few 6'x4' canvasses kill echoes extremely well.

In all seriousness, the biggest problem with open homes is that the kind of people that buy them tend towards the minimalist, leaving little inside the house to break up the sound.

If they don't want the house to feel cluttered (to them), strategically placed rugs and wall canvasses are the best option.

Ran into old buddy yesterday who has now built over 80 Kitfoxes for customers. Was asking when my kit was going to hit his shop.

Yep. No more experimental Helos for me. (planes are different). I suffered a reduction gear failure coming back from Ohio over one of the biggest mountains on the trip. VERY easily could have ended up a smoking hole on the side of a mountain. Suffered total power loss and executed a power off auto rotation landing in a ladies side yard. (srs) Almost no room for any error. I would have been happy just to walk away. But I set it down with no damage to the Helo. Her kids thought it was cool and came out to take pics with it. They dont know how close they were to seeing a dead guy crash in their yard!


After that I decided I would never fly in another exp category helo.

Had to google him. Interesting. Just kind of the way things have always worked for me. I have to be careful on what I decide I want to do as I tend to find a way to make things happen. I have learned to be more careful with this because at times of I my live the sacrifices that I make along the way were not worth the end goal. So now I think carefully before I decide I want to make something a reality.
