Bodybuilding is very narcissistic srs
Not referring to the sport, but the gym culture of bodybuilding. Having a very high value placed on visual appearance (be it muscle size, definition, etc). Staring in the mirror a lot and seeking other people's admiration.

Well that's usually how you notice progress and results in your performance, with body building specifically.
brb I'm going to build something but never look at it as progress is made

****gits are deceptive liars who put on fashion shows and so on to be better than others and get attention.
If you workout daily for decades, it's about health and fitness, not being a ****git. It feels good to be fit and it something to be proud of as it's a lot of work.
If you are working out to impress girls, only to give it up once you have one, then get fat, you are a deceptive ****git.
If you are working out to look good and be strong and fit, you are smart and of high quality.

However, body-building has it's origins in the beginning of the 20th century and was about using exercises to increase muscle mass in order to fight decay that happens due to old age.
It's a hygiene type of activity.
There's nothing gay about brushing your teeth and the same thing goes for fitness.

yea agreed.
not even the vanity but then it goes an extra mile into "genetics" - like "my genetics are better than yours"
so you start out not feeling that special. then what youre doing is directly beneficial to you. but then in order to separate yourself you start thinking about how much more special you are - and your "genetics" are superior

This is true, but honestly if feels good to be in really good shape. I finally have my core and upper back muscles back in good shape for the first time in a couple years, and my mood is significantly improved and quality of life is much higher. Standing up straight, able to stay at parties where I'm on my feet for hours without getting tired or losing energy to converse.
If it's just a vanity thing, yeah bodybuilding is not really worth it. But the rest of the benefits definitely are. Like it or not, people respect a person who is in shape over a fat slob.

competitive bodybuilding is insanely narcissistic, it has to be to be good its also why I probably wont compete again
I became a lot more aware of the person I am and how I treat people and my value to my friends/family/wife, and my last 2 preps just to get to the level of conditioning to win and keep my muscle, get posing down etc... i had to be EXTREMELY self involved and selfish with my time and energy. I felt like a piece of **** human most of the time but it was literally that, or lose. MY wife/family/friends support me and know im only like that because it is what it takes to win, but it still effects the relationships and it effects you. Good to be aware of it, but its also hard on you because it requires you to be a piece of **** narcissist.

People as individuals are often better than they are in groups. Peer pressure usually gets people to act even worse than they would as individuals, although there is also conformity to mediocrity and occasionally peer pressure can create a "hero".
That's what I perceive the problem to be in bodybuilding. People who get into bodybuilding equate having a killer physique with discipline, deferred gratification, being strong, being tough, etc etc etc. And to some extent those things may be true. They are also ***socially prized***.
I think one reason that you probably have a lot of closet cases in the sport and people who aren't really socially radical...well...part of it may be that they are afraid of being axed by their sponsors with whom they are in contractual obligations, so those sponsors would be at least partially to blame. But part of it is because they become more and more the kind of person who goes with the groove of doing what is popular and being popular.
What it boils down to is a classic duality of PHYSICAL courage versus MORAL courage. Usually, if somebody has courage, it is one or the other - not both.
Physical courage is generally more prized in our society - especially among males. Be strong, be tough, be courageous. The thing is...it is usually rewarded.
Moral courage is often, or I would say usually, NOT rewarded. It is more risky.
Case-in-point. The 1949 Mr. America competition. Jack Delinger vs. Melvin Wells. Both in the overall competition (to see who wins "Mr. America"), as well as in the "Most Muscular competition".
Delinger won the overall title whereas Wells won the "Most Muscular" title. But Delinger was substantially more muscular for his height than Wells. Delinger was an absolute beast and was more muscular at his height than any major title-winner (America, Universe, whatever) had been to that point or would be for a number more years. He obviously should have won "more muscular", which is pretty objective. When something like that is "engineered" the way it was, and I would say that it definitely was engineered, there is a reason. The organizers are trying to say something to the audience, to the viewers. Both Delinger and Wells occupied the top 2 slots in both segments of the competition. Well, the "Most Muscular" was backwards. Obviously. Well, maybe if the "Most Muscular" results were backwards, so were the overall "Mr. America" results. Photos of Wells show that in a lot of ways he was like Reeves - only moreso. Extreme EXTREME v-taper, for example. Very proportioned. Wells was apparently a very good sport. He was probably great on all of the "subjective" factors that they looked for back then in the competition. BUT THE AAU STILL DIDN'T AWARD HIM THE OVERALL TITLE, and they DEFINITELY did the "Most Muscular" competition backwards from what it should have been. Well, they were perhaps being "smart" in getting this message across, but they were NOT being courageous.
Only one year later, in 1950, the Pulitzer Prize committee awards African-American Gwendolyn Brooks the highest award in the USA for poetry - the Pulitzer Prize. This was before Martin Luther King Junior, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, even before Brown vs the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. That is MORAL courage.
Why couldn't the AAU have awarded Melvin Wells the overall Mr. America title only one year earlier, rather than being "smart". Well, those guys had physical courage, but they were lacking in moral courage.
Why is it that you hardly have top-level athletes, especially bodybuilders, who will take stands like this? Look at what happened to Bob Paris. After he came out - pretty much exiled from the world of bodybuilding. Any more examples after Paris? I can't think of any prominent ones. It's very disappointing, really, looking at elite athleticism like that, but it is pretty true. It is also true of very high-level CEOs. They are often lacking in that kind of moral courage in terms of "being out" or doing anything against their self-interests, because they are about $$ and growing companies, not taking risks and speaking out against "the system".
I mean, I have tried time and time again to build myself up physically, but have been pretty unsuccessful. Some of that is lack of support. Some of that is lack of knowledge. Some of it is the result of lifelong bullying towards me. Well, instead I have moral courage. It's not like I've never failed a "moral courage" test, but sometimes I would fail after taking all the blows I did from sticking my neck out only for it to get cut off - I just wouldn't have much left to give...not much left in the tank. Now, I'm nearly 50 and pretty much fed up. And believe me, sometimes it really is one person vs the world, which means tough luck for that one person, and plenty more people are to blame. In the jungle, it's the rules of the jungle, and that's tough luck. But we are *supposedly* living in this world that *supposedly* has something called civilization. Right?
If only we could bring together those with physical courage and those with moral courage.

i disagree, bodybuilding is one aspect of a mindset aimed at self improvement. the desire to put in work to accomplish extreme goals is great to have, especially if it applies to everything you do
getting eye fuked by pretty girls and getting respect from other guys without having to say or do anything is pretty cool too.

I think the subjectivity in bodybuilding gets very confused as bodybuilding is a very comprehensive judgement to a very advanced and trained eye. It becomes about proportions, symmetry, balance, size, shape, conditioning, posing ability and mastery, and current standards.
Even if it is a muscularity contest all standards must be met accordingly by the judgment panel and the athlete/competitor should learn what the judges want to see. You are called a PROFESSIONAL for a reason. A professional in ANY profession is expected to have mastery of their craft and act in a way they are very advanced, and part of bodybuilding is knowing what judges are looking for even specific judges. We do that at the fricking amateur level to be honest. I know most judges in Texas and know what most judges are looking for and know how to play to their strengths and I am not even a professional.

Bodybuilding is self-improvement which requires to have self-criticism. Bodybuilders 'mire themselves only when they have made progress, this is called building up confidence.
Narcissist are not self-critical. They do not listen to other people's opinion, usually devalue others who seem to gather ovations, enforce their own opinions and ways without a bit of thought whether they can be improved. Usually, such people are really aggressive when somebody tries to give them an argument. Oftenly their reaction to arguments is by manipulation - twist the other person's words or even make up narratives that don't even exist, they also usually get really defensive and try to make you look like the bad guy if their opinion is even slightly put into question.
Basically imagine a redditor lol
