Sounds like you’re gonna have to leave your company if you really want to get into security. How do you get along with your coworkers? Sounds like it’s a case of either

a.) you don’t get along with the people making the decisions

Or

b.) you are too valuable in your current position so they don’t want to replace you from that aspect(probably the more likely situation)


Talk to coworkers and management to let them know you plan to switch to the security side of the field, and that you hope to do so with your current company. That’s your best chance of landing a security gig with your current company. Also, build good relationships with the new security guy as well as the rest of your security team. Continue to learn and network as far as security is concerned. Tryhackme is a good site for getting introduced to a lot of different security topics.

Op, a lot of times not you, it's your resume. It's probably going to cost you from $100-$150 but go on a site like Fiverr and request someone to professionally tailor your resume to get through the ATS software.

That's what I did. It took about a week for them to reword my resume and spruce it up to look professional. After I had the service done I got 3 hits on my resume in a week when I was in a 1 month dry spell.

It's not a literacy issue. You can have perfect grammar, but if youre not using the right synonyms for important key words or a specific sentence structure or if the overall formatting of your resume does not agree with the ATS software, your resume will be overlooked and won't even be entertained for an interview, even if you're the perfect candidate.

I can't fathom how a person in network engineering doesn't know enough about infosec to land a security job.

I'm a systems engineer/architect with 25 years experience and I am basically being forced into a Sr Security Engineer role.

How does a young man gain experience when there are no entry-level positions for certain fields? that's one of the greatest catch-22s in the working world.



Honestly, it just comes down to if they like your personality or not. If they actually took the time to interview you in person, then your qualifications look good enough on paper. The interview was just a personality test.


The key is to try to make the transition at your current company into the field you're interested in.... then jump ship to a new company.

OP, I applied to 125 jobs in the first 6 months of 2022. For just about every single one, I met the minimum qualifications. I went through a total of about 12 interviews with 6 different companies before landing my current job (tech). This is a competitive market. You've got layoffs everywhere which means a lot of qualified people will be looking. Not saying this to discourage you, but to set expectations. Things you can do that others aren't:

- Find the recruiter for the job and message them on LinkedIn expressing interest, something you like about the company, 2-3 bullets why you think you're a good fit, and a copy of your resume
- This is kind of a numbers game at this point. Sign up for LinkedIn professional (the career one) and set filters for the job you're looking for. I was spending roughly 10-15 hours a week searching and applying to jobs
- Consider hiring a resume coach. I did and it worked wonders
- Stop interviewing how you think companies want you to interview and start being true to yourself. Ask people around you what your strengths are and lean in on those. Often times you don't even realize they are your strengths because they come so naturally to you it just seems like "the way"

You only fail if you quit. Don't give up.
