@ 2:45ish onwards & 5:10 onwards (the tapping and incessant shredding is a bit autistic mode after awhile but still impressive as ****)

Because people like Robin Trower and Joe Satriani are still alive, plus many other amazing guitar players.
IDK this guy was not that impressive

Alive is a relevant term as Eddie Van Halen is no longer with us.
Given your name wouldn't you say Adam Jones?
Or Jeff Beck?

what do you think is the best Tool riff? his work in descending i think is incredible
@ 11:45ish the solo is amazing. guthrie couldn't pull **** like that, even though he's 'techincally' better.
adam jones just creates amazing sounds

I have to go with Forty Six & 2 as I started listening to TOOL when I was in college so I loved every song in AEnima.

IDK i don't see it, playing fast and shredding is not that impressive if what your playing does not sound good and is just up and down scales without much musicality. its pretty bland and very meh.
I've seen much more impressive acoustic performances.

Used to think that he is the best but people like Scott Henderson and Greg Howe and Ritchie Kotzen are his influences and still alive. And because I like that style of fusion jazz/blues/funk I think those guys are more authentic.
Guthrie can probably play what they play and more from a techincal point of view and in this sense he indeedis the greatest but WHAT he plays is definetly inspired and not the original.
And when it comes to actual jazz/fusion Mike Stern, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, Meola, Scofield and many many others are better both technically and artistically at playing that style of music.
So you could argue that Guthrie is the best jack of all trades and exceeds at that and at individual styles but he couldn’t be named the best blues or jazz or rock guitarist for example.
He’s the greatest guitarists’ guitarist though imo.

Came in expecting Guthrie. 100% srs. Have seen him play live numerous times and had a beer with him after the show. Super chill and modest dude. Came from nothing, worked his ass off, appreciates every second of his life.

Definitely a good choice, and glad you picked someone with more than technical skills. But there's no best guitarist alive. There are others who have just as much versatility and technical ability, and write interesting songs which incorporate a wealth of influences.
Tosin Asabi is one example. Animals as Leaders are incredible.

Amazing how the vocal stylings of James LaBrie are so objectionable that they can negate John Petrucci from this conversation.

Last time I checked, Matteo Mancuso was like the next big thing. Don't know if there's anyone close to his level in the game right now. He keeps getting better and his tastes are becoming more diverse.

and the most boring debate on the misc is back for part 385
past a certain point, its tuneless noise. There are thousands of guitarists who can get to that point, so they are all by definition as good as each other and 'best' is purely subjective
