There is no way they could get people in and study their brains activity during rare Deja Vu experiences btw, so objectively we cannot know for sure.

Wat is happening

One theory is that it's a delay in processing of an experience by the various senses, which triggers the sensation that it's a "memory" or past experience.



E.g. you're watching a cat walk by


Brain processes the visual info of this current experience

Brain processes the audio info of this current experience

Brain processes the olfactory (smell) info of this current experience but is delayed for one reason or another



You get the sense that you've seen/experienced this exact moment before, and you can't exactly recall how, or when...and you can't exactly predict what will happen next (if it was in fact some lived experience from your memory), but it just FEELS like you've seen/experienced this exact same moment before. But this is only because of the delay of the smell info being processed, which kind of triggers the experience as a memory, since the other sense info was already processed beforehand.



Replace smell with visual, or audio, or whatever. Point is, you get the sense it's a past memory.

I believe I have had dreams in my youth that latter happen like 20 years latter, and in that moment it feels like dejavu on crack
