Is air superiority even a thing anymore?

Because on the ground, they have missiles that cost much less than an aircraft, and can lock onto an aircraft and take it out... with very little effort.

Point>lock on>fire>bye bye aircraft.

It's not like the old days where they would shoot many... many... many... explosives up into the air and take out aircraft by chance, these missiles seek and destroy with ease

It's like, "You've got air superiority?... good job spending all your money on that, while I spend a tiny amount of money on these missiles and take out your aircrafts... meanwhile I spend all my other money on ground superiority"

I don't know anything but I'd bet so. I think almost all of the real ufo sightings are our own advanced drones that can evade all sorts of ground defenses and aren't limited by what a human pilot can handle. Look at stealth, a technology started in WWII which we're using now. We're probably a hundred+ years ahead of what we think we have right now.

Any real aircraft need to be flying at around 100 feet or less to avoid SAMs (even thats too high).

Basically it comes down to whoever has the best missle range which would allow aircraft to fly unprotected.

Thats not even talking about the fith gen fighters like the F-35.

Ths F-35 can shoot down aircraft that the pilot can't even see just like a missle. Todays dogfights are like 20 miles apart.

It's not like countries have SAM sites spread out evenly everywhere on the planet. SAMs are used for defending specific areas but not much use beyond that. A hypothetical air engagement could happen anywhere, including over water.

Then you have stealth fighters which can evade detection pretty easily. IIRC they were struggling to do training exercises for the F35 because it was so stealthy the ground radars could not see the planes at all.

But you are correct in one sense - the traditional need for pure air superiority fighters is not really there anymore. Simply because those kind of Top Gun dogfights against Russian MIGs haven't been a real thing for 30-40 years.

Which is why the F22, incredible as it is, was cut short and doesn't have much of a use anymore, at least anything that couldn't be done by a much cheaper multirole fighter like the F35.
