Was WW1 just 10D chess from European elites?

To shut down communist rhetoric and union formations they threw all their men into the meat grinder to kill off a vast majority and make the rest docile and subservient when they get back?

Heard this theory online from a guy who spoke to a former WW1 vet who believed this to be true
