The Audiophile Crew Thread

What's up music heads? You got some nice stereo gear? you got some great tunes to share?

Currently I'm rocking a nice micro/compact HIFI setup , I listen to a HUGE variety of music , but have really been getting into Japanese 70's-80's Prog rock and Jazz fusion lately.
I collect a few artists also. I'm really into Jun Fukamachi

I collect CD's mostly and try to listen that way as much as possible. One CD at a time in its full.

Dont consider myself an audiophile, but im in on this to learn.

Just bought a basic record player setup a few months back to play a collection of records i inherited.

2x Sonos Five

Need a recommendation for mid-grade speakers brahs

I'll post some of my audio setups later. The one in my car now is pretty crazy. I have some old projects too. I'm also into home theater chit and headphones etc.

Dont even have an amp brah. My table has a pre-amp built in and the speakers are powered.

Bryston is a top notch brand made in Ontario , you can pick up locally even I think.
Bryston Amps get pretty expensive, But you will want a good integrated or better a pre amp and power amp combo.

you can go many ways with amps and connectivity so a good plan is nice.

Matching them is a bit of an art, knowing how to read the specs and knowing what you want to go for helps.

room size and music types. sources. are important in deciding.

I have a pair of Focal Electra 1038Be2 powered by a Primaluna Tube amp. Im waiting for my Decware Zen Torii MKV tube amp to come in. Might change the speakers to high efficiency if needed.

For my home theater is Marantz and Parasound.

Its not super complicated, You'll get as many answers though as people you ask. You could join an audiophile forum and look around read up.

Personally I like to Mix and Match my gear. A lot of the long time audiophiles still push old gear and technology but the new stuff now is amazing and can compete with anything. A lot of it is "snake oil" and totally not worth the time and effort unless your after the last 2% of audio quality at any cost.

The laws of diminishing returns strikes hard and fast in the audio world and the middle tier gear technology is amazing and affordable now.

The Important thing to learn up on first is Speakers and the power ratings and what kind of AMP power they require.
But if your really buying good stuff the manufactures recommendation is pretty good and shoot for the top end of the power rating and you'll be set.

consider is the whole stereo set up going to be an everything entertainment center that includes the TV and movies.?

Really IMO a stereo setup is just fine for movies, surround sound is over rated, consider you dump all that money in the first place into a killer 2 channel stereo with amazing big speakers and you won't miss all those little surround speakers anyway and you'll be set for music too.

A stereo system is a long term investment and will outlast most cars, consider its gonna last 20 years or more so drop a good amount on it and never worry about wanting to upgrade. Get core components that stand alone in their tech so little things can be upgraded without dumping the big parts if that makes sence.

maybe you'll need to move the focal over to the theater room. 20wpc might be a little light for those.

what are you looking at for high efficiency? what your thoughts on Tekton perfect set models of high efficacy speakers?

I was hardcore before going partially deaf thanks the C.

Built my own speakers and subs for home theater use back in the day. All I have now is a couple 2000 series KEF eggs and cheap Lepai amp.

obviously I don't listen to them on YT lol....

I listen to lots of everything. you'd be surprised how good the Japanese are at recording technology.

Jun Fukamachi is a musical legend his catalog speaks for itself. He played with greats like Steve Gadd and the Brecker Brothers.

I'm not big into streaming so not sure if you got multichannel that can go from your computer but I imagine its possible.

do you play alot of FLAC and WAV files then? streaming in Tidal or other hifi outlets?


I like playing actual regular CD's, I do some pandora streaming as filler its only I think 320kbmpr but its pretty well matched for the BT aptxHD and simple right from the phone. I like to do searching on YT because I think it still has the best variety of hard to find stuff.

I'm into physical media, I think any physical media CD's,Vinyl even Tape,,and stored digital can be great to... will always trump the streaming. it has a different feel and liviness to it...Streaming introduces a lot of jitter and you can't back clock it.

2x Mackie Thump212 1,400-watt 12-inch Powered Speakers (PA) in my Jam room w an optional SVS 10" sub

a vestax turntable going to 2 Edirol MA20D Powered Monitors

SVS home theater 5.1 system i bought in 2011 for around $1500

In my home studio I have 2 Tannoy GOLD 7 Premium monitors i use for mixing and making music.

Honestly don't really give a fuk about "sound quality". I could listen to music on my google home all day.

I'd rather bump sht loud as fuk on my PA to piss off the neighbors

I'm getting there, I have an "entry level" 5.1.4 dolby atmos in my living room with klipshe speakers and a denon receiver

I have a good sound card and a nice set of Beyer dynamic Dt990 pro 250ohm on my pc

I listen to alot of lossless music via apple music and lossless/dolby atmos tracks thru tidal. I listen to all kinda music so it works out.

I'm probably going to upgrade to a better set of cans for my pc, I've had the Beyer dynamics for almost 10 years now


I might build a new 2.1 or 2.0 setup in my smoking room. My gfs dad gave me some jbl bookshelf speakers that are really nice, been looking for a tube amp



BTW tidal has music better then CD quality. They have the master for a ton of artists of every genre. I'm able to use the app on my tv or pc and listen that way.

Yeah some good fun loud system is fun to, who doesn't love a nice cerwin vega setup? I can't go big and loud where I am so I opt for small and HIFI

I use custom pro IEMs regularly - desktop through an RME Adi-2 DAC (the specific iem channel is particularly good).

Desktop speakers are Genelec with a Genelec sub - I really like the crisp, reference approach of studio monitors.

For fun I like the Audeze LCD-5s. People complain about the Audeze weight but it has never bothered me.

Nice to see other folks into high fidelity listening.

Used to be all into audiophile until I realized that after a few hours/days your ears become accustomed to whatever equipment you have anyways and then you crave that next "fix", spending boat loads of $$$ on that next big DAC/AMP/HP so I couldn't justify spending hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on equipment that my ears will get phased out of and then have to spend another $1,000 for that "brand new equipment"

It's a dangerous escape/hobby to your wallet

Have some airpods, my sony noise cancelling, and apple music, that's all i need

though I did use to have a DENON AH-D2000, it was amazing for bass/hip hop

Tidal is great for hifi. Try to find a free month or just try it out. I literally only have it for the hifi and master selection.

My LG cx TV has tidal built in so it works thru hdmi arc to my receiver and I can listen to atmos tracks or hifi/master and it sounds incredible.

I guess I just don't see the point in spending $1000's and $1000's on equipment that your ears are subjectively going to get used to and it's going to sound like a cheap $50 pair of headphone at the end of the day.

At least with golf clubs you are getting something that will provide you an opportunity to play a sport, of which your subjective experience of will be different every time as you get better and better at playing golf. 18, 9 hole courses, driving range, playing w /friends. All varied experiences.

I also use Amazon Music HD through to the DAC I mentioned earlier. Source is so important.

Not a big spender on audio, but I appreciate it more than the regular person.

Big into synth music lately. The official Scarface soundtrack was very recently released on CD in limited print (5000). I got that right away. Looking for a decent CD player to listen to it the right way. Headphones are Audio Technical M40x.

What kind of budget you working with for a CD player? You got other equipment.?

Like I said I'm a big fan of Fukamachi, who was also a huge pioneer in Synth music, the institute of Tokyo even put him in charge of a synth masters program....he did soundtracks also for anime on occasion.

Tekton speakers seem to be a great fit for home theater/music at the same time, big modern design speakers the are good priced made in usa. Big sound and hifi sound.

but room aesthetics is important size and decor plays as much a role as sound for most people, because legit most good speakers sound good looks adds to it.
