Chasing an AMG Black Series POV

Did a little mountain run today. Got to chase the tail of my buddies AMG Black series for a bit. The Lotus holds its own in the corners (which is all that is up there). So he never got very far from me.

I got separated from the group and missed a turn. 2nd vid is a nice road. Cant drive "all out" since you never know what is coming, but these roads can push the limit for sure. Had a friend go off in a Carrera T. I was right behind him and the 911 curse got him. I still have not had a chance to see if I got it on vid.

The new 3RS is incredible! The aero and in cockpit adjustability of rebound/dampening, and diff.. Just another level. Cant wait to see them run! I have quite a few friends with 3rs cars for their track cars. This one takes it to a new level. Only problem is Porsche dealers suck. They screw with people and want to sell over MSRP to even their good customers. Even my buddy with a 918 cant get a guaranteed allocation for a 3RS and he bought 3 Porsche last year AND is a 918 owner. Lambo and Ferrari dealers know how to treat their loyal customers. Porsche not so much....

Never played it. I do use Asetto Corsa on our sim and it has a great deal of carry over into the car. We use it for event prep in the coming weeks of a track event.

I love it just as much because I can do all the work on it. Even though I am capable of doing anything mechanical to a car, on my Lambos, I did not even change the oil. When the time comes to sell them, people want to see a maintenance history. They dont want some guy changing the oil on a car like that in his garage. So I played that game with those cars.

But this little car, I am all up in it!

I did get the video of the guy in the porsche spinning. I need to see if I can edit out his license plate before I post it. He got VERY lucky he did not go off the other side of the road. Would have been bad!

If I can hide his tag, I will post it.

Myron! How confident are you throwing the Lotus around with no drivers assists? Looks like it will be hard to recover with a short wheelbase unless you're David Coulthard

No doubt. The 2ZZGE is an incredible motor. It was actually designed by Yamaha for Toyota. In it's stock form in the Lotus, it put out about 180hp out of the 1.8 L. I am at about 360hp right now. Or about 200hp/L. I have a motor build planned over the winter to go to about 425. My only concern it I dont want to blow it up on the track. It is one thing to have power in a street car, but on track , this car run WIDE OPEN for 20-25 min at a session. But I already have 2 motors and 2 transmissions. I am going to have to do an upgraded trans to handle the power as well.

360hp might not seem like a ton, but my car weighs 1960lbs. I weighed and corner balance prior to our last track day. That is a better power to weight than a GT3RS. Of course, the 3RS with its PDK and all the nannies will be easier to drive fast, but my car (in the right hands) and not on a super high speed track, will run or beat a 3RS which is pretty much the pinnacle of a track car that is still street legal.

Lots of fun, and really enjoying this.

This is a quick vid of the guy losing it in his Porsche. He just put bigger turbos on it and dyno'd 675 whp. But that did not help him in the corner. I watched many times, and I think he was thrown from lifting off the brake before he apex'd. I watched in slow mo and you can see him get on the brake, and then tail lights go out and spin starts. Luckily he did not go off the right side. That would have been bad. He demolished the nose and front radiators were leaking fluid. But does not look like anything structural.

I don't know much about anything, but man, you guys weren't going all that fast. I drive similar roads every day to and from work and I'm usually going about as fast as you guys were and I have had an issue or even a scare.

Most has to do with being filmed from a go-pro which have fish eye. If you watch that vid of the Porsche going "slow", then you watch his rear end come out.... Maybe it is faster than it LOOKS. He was on Cup 2 tires also! If one of the best handling sports cars in the world, loses it around a corner, it is not going 'slow'.

This is what the roads look like. I am guessing you are trolling.

Or maybe its driver error? Going fast doesn't validate a car that's meant to go fast and handle that type of driving losing control and crashing. Why didn't everyone crash then? By the way OP you should shift gears more. Wouldn't surprise me if these guys you're out with just aren't all that great at driving. Owning a nice car doesn't mean you're a nice driver. I've been in friends nice cars that were crashed because of driver error (one very similar to your video) and laughed off knowing I wouldn't have crashed in those scenarios (and thankful nobody was hurt). That being said it is part of the "sport" - I've never crashed my whip but I've taken self inflicted spills on my mountain bikes and dirtbikes plenty of times. These things happen.

I'm not trolling, I am gauging the speed from your speedometer.

Ha! Classic! The 'expert' drivers of the MISC have all showed up. So I can tell you dont know a lot. The 911 WHEN DRIVEN AT IT'S LIMIT, is known to snap spin. It might look slow to you, but take a 40mph corner, and turn the wheel 90+ deg and see what kind of G's you pull. The 911 is known as a "widow maker' and it does NOT like trail braking. The spin was initiated because he let off brake too late and it upset the car.

It is true that the guy who crashed is not a seasoned track driver. But 90% of the guys on the drive regularly track their cars. But the 911 is very tricky and many people, even experienced people crash them just like that. The mountain runs are MUCH harder than a track since you dont know what is coming. On a track, you know the 'line' and it is easier to judge. On a mountain run it is very sketchy at times since you really dont know what is coming and there is no margin for error. (as you saw).

To answer your question as to why I didnt crash.. My car will pull almost 2 g's on track. A mustang gt will pull .89. A corvette Z06 will pull 1.2. My car is essentially a race car that just happens to be street legal. The AMG Black series, is one of the most formidable cars on the planet. (in stock form, it serves as the F1 pace car) Former Nurbruging record holder only to be misplaced by the GT2RS.

Yea, slow bunch these guys. One of the guys out with us, tested with Williams F1. Of course he in not from the US. Born in Jordan. His track car is a radical SR8. Here is a vid of him driving 'slow' back in 16 testing. 2nd vid is his radical on track.

He drive a Black series. And I am sure he has more speed in him. But he is driving a 600k car on unprepared roads where you dont know what is coming. Guess you would be much quicker :-)

In a normal car, these are 15-20 mph turns. We are hitting them at twice that speed. Enough that misjudged, a 911 will spin in a heartbeat. I have a very high rate rack in my car. I am turning the wheel approx 90 deg. Which is about like turning a normal wheel 150deg. So I have a little illustration for you. Get in your car, drive 45 mph and turn your wheel 150deg. See what happens.

More misc knowledge. Modern trans have synchros. You dont double clutch them. The C64 trans does not like to be rushed. If you do, you will burn out the synchros. It is a slow shifting trans. Attempts to shift faster just kill the trans. For dedicated track lotus, a lot of guys go to a sequential. It is about a 20k investment. But you really cant run them on the street. Since my Lotus is street driven, no point in my going sequential. I also plan on letting my son use it as his 'fun' car. (he only just got his permit). But when he gets a license, he can drive it on street as he pleases.

I recently bought him an AP1 S2000 when he got his permit. We are going to track it once so he can find it's limit, but not going to make it a full blown track car. It is cool from him to have something to work on with me!

To illustrate how "slow" the corners are. This is a vid from a run I did a while back. I was passing the C63AMG (he waved me by because I was taking the corners faster than him). This was with my Huracan and I almost lost it in a 50 mph corner. I caught it. If I had not, it would have been pretty nasty with that rock wall and nowhere to go.

So @godfred, this is not exactly a 'pedestrian' car and it does not LOOK like I am going all that fast. Just VERY tight corners. And the Huracan is AWD with the computers working all the time to keep the car planted. I guarantee you would not be driving this road with your car anywhere near these speeds. Most normal cars are taking these at 20mph up through these hills.

I'm in no way saying that the cars aren't capable, what I'm saying is that I regularly drive roads with 25mph speed limits and similar curves at 40 and 50 mph. I want to get a 911, it's my affordable dream car, but seeing how easy they spin out makes me not want to. And again, I'm not saying that you don't know what you're doing, just that for cars that are all more than $100k each, you're not doing anything that couldn't be done in a stock Type R.

Also, you can sure as hell double clutch a transmission with helical synchros. In fact, double clutching is just used to match the revolutions of the clutch with the revolutions of the flywheel. It's a necessity in trannys with straight cut gears, but can also be done in any modern manual transmission.

Ouch for Mr 911 trail braking too deep.

Jelly of your roads, we have fun ones here but there is so much traffic and road surfaces are usually in bad shape.
If you can't handle me when I'm incel, you don't deserve me when I'm chad

No one was street racing, they were going slow as fuk. They may have been going under the speed limit.

I did not say double clutching can not be done, I said you dont need to do it in a modern box w/ synchros.

Also again, the perception of speed does not translate well. Looking at that vid where I almost lost it in the Huracan, does not look 'fast'. But in one of the best AWD handling cars on R street tires found the limit of grip.

A civic type R is actually quite a nice performance car. In tight roads it could probably hang. It would not be running in the front of our pack, but it could handle.

There is a lot to handling in cars that people who have never driven at the limit do not know. Here is a good vid of my son spinning on track last month the same way the 911 did. My car has some similarities with handling quirks with it's rear weight bias.

He entered the corner at 68 and made the mistake of lifting in the corner and sure enough...snap turn. He was at 1.3 g when it let go (my car can take more than that) but he upset the balance. Also my car has no 'nannies'. No computers and stability control trying to keep you going the proper direction. All driver skill.

Then if you watch the first part of the 2nd vid, (15 sec mark) I keep on throttle though that same corner and go 72 though it. You can hear a blip in RPM as the wheel ALMOST break traction, but I kept the balance of the car.
Watching my vid is a great example of how things dont look fast. There is a g-meter on the side. A Corvette Z06 has a max cornering of 1.2 g. You can see I am breaking that cornering force on most every turn. Meaning a vette trying to drive that fast though the corners would spin. Does not "look" fast but that is the illusion of watching from a camera.

I think part of it is speed does not translate on camera. Its why they speed up movie car scenes. Watching a F1 car looks 'normal' and they pull g's that only fighter pilots do. Trust me, there is no way you are driving a 'normal' car around those corners at those speeds.

Even a 'decent' performance car like a 2018 Mustang GT can only corner at .98g. A civic type R can corner at 1.02g. Not bad.

Well, I just posted a catalyst vid with a g-meter. In the vid below I was on DOT Flaken Azenis steet legal tires. I peaked at 1.6 in that vid. But earlier that day, I went out to spin the car on purpose to see what it would hold and I pulled 1.8. I tried to get 1.9 and it broke out.

On the mountain run, you can't go balls out since you have no idea what is next and no room to recover. I was running as fast as I felt comfortable given the unknows and safety.
