Because they need to keep their trainies confused. If they learn to just do basic compound exercises then they might ditch the trainer. If they think they need to do complicated ridiculous chit, they will keep coming back. Same with a bunch of fitness YouTubers. Like the dude who won't tell people to bench press. Rather, you need to use an earthquake bar with kettlebells hanging from rubber bands and balance on a bossu ball and manipulates a bunch of cherry picked BS studies to fit his narrative. Can't remember the guys name but the chit he tells people to do is insane.

I thought I was the only one, but I’m glad you guys see it too. I’m not an athlete, I just listen to big and strong dudes, so these exercises are definitely foreign to me and my predecessors!
What really sends me over the top is balance workouts on the most unstable item in the gym + a heavy weight.

Probably correcting over/under active muscles. Most people have a handful of muscle imbalances. And a good trainer will correct those things before focusing on building muscle.
One of the leading cause of sport injuries is from people not being well versed in lateral and transversal movements.

People in the gym tend to focus only on the flexion and extension movements.
A good trainer will help their clients be well rounded. To the untrained eye these exercises may seem silly, but theres a purpose.
