Fine line between Narcissism and extreme loneliness

Just feel like airing it out. I could also have put this in the mental health / depression forum elsewhere on this site, but it's okay for Misc, right? I hardly check anywhere else. Plus, as rambunctious and prickly as Misc can be, it can also be a lot of fun if you navigate it intelligently. I've actually started having silent conversations with myself in Misc slang. Fun.

Nevertheless, I shall say that I find myself at times vampirically narcissistic (redundant phrase, I know). And I feel like a loser and a waste and all sorts of stuff. But then I also think that I've been excluded/bullied/marginalized a whole lot, and without a social network or friends or occupation or hardly any money of my own, I try to read myself into all sorts of things online. Fine line between narcissism and loneliness, sometimes. Kinda hard to navigate that duality and reality. But such as it is. Thanks for listening.

Lonely people can become selfish and egotistical, probably because they don't have others in their life to consider

https://www.thecut.com/2017/08/a-new...e-selfish.html

Many kids are narcissistic untill they get their first job, which is when they humble down and learn to cooperate

I don't think reading or self help is the best way to deal with it as you'll still be lonely. Focus on interacting with others and get some feeling of unity (friends, class mates, colleagues, sports, activities)

Good points.

Fine line between selfish and self-absorbed, though. I've meditated on that quite a bit over the course of my life. It's icky to psychologize that, but also perhaps a survival skill.

Yeah, many kids are narcissistic until they get their first job. As you said, yes, some of them start to snap out of it. Others who are more 'clever' along those lines, turn their workplaces into a source of narcissistic supply.

Narcissists are always lonely, precisely because nobody actually knows them, even they do not know themselves, only the illusion (false self) that they have created, hence why they are lonely people, even in groups: they don't love anybody, not even themselves.

A person who spends a lot of time alone but knows themselves can never be lonely, in fact a sign of a mentally healthy person is one that is completely satisfied being alone.

Because a narcissist lacks self generated 'love', a narcissist needs constant attention and 'supply' to fuel this false self, which is basically just another way of saying that they need somebody or something to feed their ego AT ALL TIMES, because it's not true and they know it, so how can they feel good about them selves unless there's somebody there to reaffirm this falsehood that their mind hand condured.

Sound like you? Yeah thought so.

What makes you think you're better than others if you don't have any objective measures of success to show for (money, women, friends, status, etc)?

People who are better than others don't care if they are better than others, they seem to mostly get on with their lives - it's those people who think that they're above others who seem to be stuck in a rut, and yes, even millionaires, heck billionaires are stuck in ruts.

Money or 'objective measures of success' do not make somebody enjoy their existence, like, at all - except for when they are draining happiness out of somebody who is weaker than them.

I think it just depends on what you're being cocky about - if you're being cocky around people who are not quite perfect whilst being insecure about themselves, you would just come across as a social retard who gets off on 'being better' than people who are not even that good.

In this case you either don't associate with those you deem unworthy, or if you love them as people you tone it down, A LOT - otherwise you just come across as a douche bag.

If you act cocky in front of people who are confident and equals in terms of gains and ambition, then that's OK, I'd guess.

I'm alone every day and I'm not narcissistic, so I can't relate.

You're not a narcissist bro. Narcissists lack humility, something I commend you for showing.
