Casual brunches and dinners are pointless.

As I get older I feel this more often. Brb catch up for a few mins and just make basic small talk but no real purpose. Maybe I have less patience for banality.
As time goes on and career changes all my dinners have turned to either educational or business driven topics.

Anyone else feels this way?

it's worse when a LDR becomes a regular one. but something tells me you struggle to control the conversation or "hold the room"

On the contrary, I’m in medical sales and during those dinners I’m directing the flow at all times. I get bored during the casual convos, there is only so many “where are you traveling next” I can do.

Possibly a phase and you may look back on this mindset with regret but maybe not. I was/am extremely career focused and sometimes I regret it. Now that I am where I want to be I'm happy but I consider looking to regain some of the social life I sacrificed. I do enjoy working/education/self improvement more though but balance is probably the healthiest.

You definitely gotta limit these meetups to people you actually enjoy the company of. If it's strictly business, that can be done over the phone.

For me to have lunch with someone, there has to be a bit of friendship there. For example, last week I had lunch with a 65 year old guy I've done a couple real estate deals with over the last 5 years. He's a big traveler, and we get along quite well. I don't even know if we'll do another deal together, but he's a fun person to chat with. Full in insight, and he drives the conversation, which I like because it takes the pressure off.

Interesting you bring up the worthlessness of them. I've recently had quite a few friends and family wanting to meet up for the mental health benefits of meeting up.

Nah man, this was my wife’s friend, an acquaintance and couple other people I have never met. I value my relationships closely.

I think the setting wasn’t best for socializing, it was a sit down brunch, very formal situation.
