Getting oil changed

Getting oil changed is an all day event now. It used to be 10 minutes but now everyone wants you to drop it off and even with an appointment ag the dealership it’s been 3 hours.

yeah its better to just order oil and filter from amazon and change out the oil at home on a day off when not much is going on. that way there is zero human interaction and very little time wasted. drink a beer while you wait for the oil to drain. pretty low effort and avoids the downsides you mention.

So every time I go for an oil change, the mechanics are always adamant about getting my air filters replaced. It's weird because I gotten mine replace 3 months ago but they're saying it needs to be replaced. I'm starting to think it might be a scam.

I just go to the dealership because I paid for a package where I get free oil changes during the lease so fuk it

Op is right I’m waiting there for like 2 hours

Never been to any of those places like jiffy lube I hear they do weird ****

I have a friend that's a mechanic, and does it for me, and I'll throw him like $40.

I can't even imagine how much oil changes must be now especially at dealerships lol probably like $70 minimum.

I remember when it used to be about $29.99.

I can't believe how long the intervals are now for cars that have computers that are processing the oil. I just went about a year and 10k miles on an oil change, oil (synthetic) was still at 15%. I was driving mostly highway.

I remember my dad changing the oil every 3k miles religiously when I was growing up.

But yeah, make appointment drop off in the morning and get it end of the day. At least they washed it and checked everything (15k) I wouldn't have done it if it wasn't free.

It’s probably not

If you don’t care about resale and aren’t maintaining the log book throw some full synthetic in there and drive it till it smokes

A new set of bearing and rings for most passenger cars is pretty cheap and you can do the water pump, timing gear, and gaskets while the block is apart (usually every 100kms)

Or just wait for it to blow/spin a bearing/throw a rod and throw another engine block in there

i don't trust most "oil change" shops.

Places like jiffy lube, valvoline, etc. I have heard too many horror stories. over torquing the oil drain plug. not putting in the correct amount of oil, etc. they do more harm than good.

that being said, its like a 20 min job to do any oil change yourself, and that's including jacking the car up, etc. I don't see why you wouldn't do it yourself. it's cheap maintenance.

I got 6 free oil changes or something when I bought a new car a few years ago. I never brought it in. I just get the oil and filter off Amazon and do it in my backyard. I don't want somebody I don't know wrenching on my car when I'm capable of doing it myself. I brought the car in once and had to leave it when a USB port was acting up. When I got my car back later I checked my instrument cluster and had a new top speed recorded. It was 130 mph. He either drove it like he stole it, or did a burnout.

it's called a pump. most modern cars have the filter up top too, so you don't need to jack it.

i personally like doing it the old fashioned way though.

Some people get free oil changes when they buy their vehicles, even then I still change my own, heard way too many horror stories about trusting low skill/pay mechanics.
