Wedding gifting 2022.... What is appropriate these days?

Wedding gifting 2022.... What is appropriate these days?
Background: Have not been to a 'friends' wedding in almost 20 years. (just family ones).
One of my friends I met through cars is getting married. He is in his late 20's. I have zero idea what is an appropriate wedding gift these days.
I remember way back people used to say $100/ head was an avg, but that was 20 years ago.
I was thinking $500. Well, I first thought $400, (double what it was years back) but then 4 is so close to 5...., I might as well make it 500. But I am just clueless. Anybody out there go to a lot of weddings?
Another consideration, is I know where the reception is being held and it is one of the more expensive venues. I am thinking it has to be costing their families close to that for 2 people.

Look for a wedding list.
A lot of people will have a wish list with certain stores/sites that you pick stuff off, or a link to a charity for you to donate to instead of gifts.
If you met him through cars and he has money, the rules change more towards buying them a birthday present: they can afford everything they want, so you buy something that they would never think of.

$500 for a wedding gift? What? F*ck no.
Like $50 or something. I'm supposed to buy you something expensive to offset you went overboard on the cost of your wedding like a retard? Nah f*ck that. If they're a really good friend then I might be willing to spend 2 or 3 hundred on a gift but they sure as sh*t better not be expecting me to do so. What's appropriate is you get them a gift. The cost should be unimportant. If I was getting married I'm not sitting there getting offended if someone gave me a gift that cost $20 for that matter. Anyone who gets offended by the cost of the gift you gave them isn't even worth being friends with imo.
Get them something you think they'll like. If it costs a lot and you're willing to pay for it go for it. If it's cheap but you think they'll like it still don't stress that it didn't cost a lot, just get them the gift. That's what is appropriate.

100-150 still seems right for weddings in 20s.
Definitely depends on the venue and how well you know the person, but 100/head still isn't a bad starting point. Then go up if the venue is nicer and if you're especially close to the newlyweds.
Had a similar conversation with my mom about this last week - 100/head really hasn't changed in the 30 years since when she was going to weddings.

150 is the minimum. I think 250 a person if you’re decently close is fine. A bit more if you’re legit best friends or immediate family.

Thanks for the feedback. No registry. And cash is never the wrong thing. As long as I can remember back I remember my mom saying you give $100 for a wedding. Well that was almost 30 years ago! So I dont think $500 is out of place in 2022.
He has become a good friend. It is because of him, that I started tracking cars and he is one of the guys that encouraged me to bring my son out. Great young guy marrying a very sweet girl. He is from Jordan and his wife lives between Paris and the US. Now that they are getting married, they will live here.
Going to be a pretty fun evening. Someone mentioned 'car club', but there in none. Just a group of friends and it is more than his car friends coming to the wedding. But he wanted to have a bit of fun for the reception so the hotel is setting up for a good photo op. He is a car nut, and his wife supports that in him. So they are setting up something for us.
Looking forward to a nice evening. Hard to believe it has been 21 years for me. 0 Regrets, and wonder what I did to be so lucky to have my wife. (srs). I owe pretty much everything to her.

He is a great guy. I dont describe many men as 'sweet', but he has a beautiful energy about him. His energy just radiates and he brings everyone closer into almost a large dysfunctional family of sorts. He was a race car driver who had his career sidelined by ulcerative colitis.
Not like just a guy who like to drive, but in the top .01% of world wide talent driver. He actually tested with Williams F1 about 8 years ago. Like LEGIT driver. His illness has been rough for him. He pretty much was sidelined all of last year with a series of very intrusive surgeries. They had to re-route his intestines, and he was on a bag while he healed. But he always had a smile and found the good in all around him.
He was on doctors orders not to lift anything more than 10 lbs while recovering, So he came out with his Radical SR8 (pulling upwards of 4g's in corners) and spent the day with us.
He is really the person who encouraged me the most to bring my son on the racetrack at 14. Normally something like that is not possible. But having good friends makes impossible things possible at times. I was nervous, for both my son, but also wanted to respect the guys we track with. There is no insurance coverage out on track and many 200,300,and 500k+ cars out there with us. It is a ton of responsibility and trust to share the track with my son and all these guys just welcomed us. Anyway, he has given me more than any amount of money could ever buy.
I know the MISC is always doubtful. And saying things like he tested in F1 is about as crazy a statement as one can make given there are only 20 seats available world wide. But I am not exaggerating on that one. Just an amazingly talented guy!
He would be the guy to do a ceremonial burn out leaving the reception
