Holy Phuk how do I cure a cough that only surfaces at night (reps for life)

Everyone at my office is sick, didn’t think i caught chit until laying down to sleep 4 nights ago and entered into a wild coughing fit.

Has happened again the last 3 nights as soon as I lay down. Finally pass out then wake up 2 hours later coughing; fap; sleep; repeat. Then I wake up and hork up mad phlegm then feel fine all day.

Today I had halls, echinacea tea; green smoothie; mad liquids, and again, lay down and starting having a coughing fit.

If anyone can help I would puke be eternally grateful as I have an important business meeting coming up and can’t sleep for chit

Yeah can’t afford that NyQuil drowsiness / out of it feel with my line of work unfortunately. Otherwise would’ve already been on the sleeping pill train.

Thanks though.

I get this often if I do any of the following:

- Have asthma issues
- Smoke/vape a lot of anything, but especially tobacco
- Drink alcohol

Normally stopping smoking/drinking substances fixes it on its own, however one time I smoked A LOT of tobacco for like a month (compared to my norm at least), and even when I quit I had terrible phlegm for 3 weeks after. During those weeks I would wake up in the middle of night weezing and short of breath, needing to clear it out to breathe clearer like I was semi-suffocating. Then I would wake up at my normal time with a fairly strong, but still milder, version of the issue I had waking up in the middle of the night those nights.

Honestly those 3 weeks might've been an untreated lung/sinus infection, which I would still attribute to smoking. Pay attention to the color of the phlegm. If it's clear, then you're totally healthy and it's just excess phlegm build up. If it's yellow it's likely a weak sickness or infection. If it's green, or especially a dark-green it's likely an infection/bacteria/illness and your immune system is having a tough time fighting it off. If it's white then that is supposed to indicate white blood cells failing to stop the issue and signs that you need medical treatment like penicillin, a strong indicator that your immune system is failing to thwart the issue. If it's red it's typcailly blood (could still be an infection or prolonged irritation/inflammation of the air ways), and if it's black it's either from smoking, fungal infection, or cancer. Brown is usually smoke related.

If you Google online about chronic phlegm build up at night, people attribute it to COPD caused from smoking. And it can take many months or even last years if it's bad enough, even if you quit smoking.

I'm not in the medical field or any sort of expert on this stuff, so I might have some things clearly wrong here. But I got my info from sources like WebMD when I was paranoid during those 3 weeks of hell.

I imagine there are any possible answers to what is going on. To me, it sounds like you caught COVID. At least that is what happened to me when I had COVID. I coughed constantly but in particular at night. It made sleeping difficult. My symptoms took about a week for them to run their course.

You mention it happens when lying down. You could be sick and it could be something with your sinuses.

This. When you lay down the acid starts working its way up and then ends up getting into your lungs and irritating the sh!t out of them. Don’t eat for at least a few hours before bed, and sleep on an incline. If you don’t address this issue it can really mess up your lungs over time. You could also try mucinex as it will dry out the mucus and allow you to sleep without trying to constantly coughs it up…but that’ll probably only help if it actually is a viral or bacterial issue, which I’d put my money on reflux ending up in lungs. So take care of that possibility first.

Now that the misc doctors have narrowed it down to these possibilities:
COVID
sinus infection
Sugar, dair, and alcohol
Tobacco
Mold
Andir conditioner
Acid reflux

I will chip in and address the elephant in the room-have you considered AIDS yet Opie?

Edit-I couldn't use NyQuil to get my kids to sleep for obvious reasons, but used Vicks. Chit worked.
Virtue is its own reward.
