The biggest secret in white collar jobs is switching jobs...but do it when younger

There's no comparison to ROI % increase when you change jobs compared to sitting in same company and hoping for promotion.
just by changing jobs over less than 3 years, you can easily increase your salary anywhere from 40% to even 100%. This is nothing compared to 10-15% increase you will get by waiting for promotion.

Most people dont do it as its exhausting, fear of rejections, work friends, laziness and complacency and once you are in your 40's you dont have much leverage as ageism is very much real.

Due to remote work/WFH, its easy to interview in your free time as a side hobby. If nothing else, it atleast keeps you sharp and keeps your foot in the market.

Some people even do multiple jobs a phenomenon called 'overemployed' but thats risky, can get you into trouble and the stress of living a lie is not worth it over long term.
But by switching jobs every year, you can grow your salary at a higher rate than most small-medium businesses will do in years.

Make sure you max out your Roth IRA and other contributions before you are no longer qualified for earning too much and use 401K matching benefits of your employer to reduce your taxable income.

Right now we are headed into a recession so maybe its not the best time to look for new job but coming out of it, the hirings will go up again and outlook will be better to negotiate high salary increase.

Its true, went from 60k to 110k by hopping twice in the same year in 2021 but this was in the peak of the great resignation

I think its also why men's career salary progression is higher on average. Men are more willing to make more assertive or risky career or company jumps for $$$. It also makes sense i see all these 30-50 year old ladies with 25 years at the same company in the operations or HR dept

I still like the idea of finding jobs that fit you and being able to maximize your income. I made a 50k jump in my base this year by changing roles.

Luckily there's a talent shortage in tech and being in specialized roles is a good thing if you have the skills and confidence to take those role

High risk high reward. Clear all debt and pay off the house early. I imagine if you are making 6 figures now you can get another 6 figure job which means $200k at minimum.

This is decent advice if you're willing to move around. I never got into the corporate grinder where you move somewhere 1 year, then they move you clear across the country the next .FUK THAT. I like my family and friends too much to move around like that. If you're young and single, its a good strategy. In my line of work, it's a very tight community where everyone knows everyone elses reputation. You can hop around in the corporate world but in a smaller business atmosphere i wouldn't advise it. Just all depends on end goals really. I would rather have reliable steady income with room to improve but also freedoms that allow me to work on my side business that im actually passionate about. Money is awesome, but at a certain income level, you dont REALLY need more to be happy. I would argue anyone living in the midwest making 200k is living like an absolute king. Do you really need more than that to be happy? I would focus more on friends, family, and experiences instead of cash and cars.

* You're stealing coffee, creamer, sugar, sweetener and (if possible) toilet paper from your company

Can confirm.

My biggest pay bumps over the 5 years of career occurred from leaving a company after 1.5 years of service, and then trying to leave the 2nd company after 3 years of service but getting a great counter offer.

$60k salary with no bonuses / overtime pay in 2017. 5 years later I'm over $110k base, and bonuses/OT bring me closer to $140k-150k.

There's definite truth in the OP. I've heard recruiters advise it and I've seen if firsthand if higher pay is what you seek. New employees, often new to their role end up making just as much, if not more than the 10 yr employees. I've seen it firsthand. That said, there are plenty of reasons people stay at their jobs even if they know they could make a bit more somewhere else. If it's 15% higher pay but 10% more hours are expected is it worth it? Or 2 less weeks of paid vacation, longer commuting time, cost of living is higher, having to sell their house, etc etc.

And yes, it's easier before having kids in school.
