Visiting Toronto for Xmas

What cool activities should I look into ?

This will be my first time going to Toronto and will be spending a full weekend. Howโ€™s Christmas time in the city?

Iโ€™ve checked out Niagara from the New York side before but was left disappointed, but i have heard Toronto side is much better view. Might as well give it a shot if I find nothing better to do.

Is the drinking age 21 in Canada? My partner isnโ€™t of age so Idk about partying. Would definitely be down though. I figured many things would be closed around Chrismas or ?

If you want to get absolutely slammed but still get tons of crazy people watching in, go to the Eaton Centre downtown mall. It is one of the biggest and most heavily trafficked malls on the planet. It will be a United Nations of people.

Best Indian food I know of is Mt. Everest Restaurant on Eglington Avenue. Little India on East Gerrard is great, but moreso during Summertime because then they have tons of sidewalk vendors and offer things you won't find during the Winter like for example freshly-pressed sugarcane juice flavored how you want it (fresh lime, fresh lemon, etc). The quality of restaurants there is really hit-or-miss, as is also the case in the main Chinatown centered around Dundas and Yonge streets downtown.

Most amazing selection of desserts is Future Bistro on Bloor Street West. They literally have several dozen kinds of cake available every day - I particularly liked their Creme Brulee Cheesecake and their Black and White Chocolate Cake. Their hot chocolate is pretty good, too.

Going up the extremely tall CN tower in their rapid-speed elevator is not for the faint of heart, but eating at the restaurant on top to get a REVOLVING 360 degree view of the Greater Toronto Area is pretty cool. The ride on the elevator costs like $15 or $20 or so, but if you eat at the restaurant and show them your receipt for that, the restaurant deducts that fee from your restaurant bill.

I recommend walking up Yonge Street from Front Street to Bloor Street. You will see the greatest assortment of cool Toronto shops that way. Kensington Market is also good for this.

There are many public ice skating rinks that are free during the winter, although you might need your own skates. At some, you can rent skates for a nominal fee. The one downtown in front of City Hall - Nathan Phillips Square - gets slammed, but great people watching. I prefer using the one at Harbourfront Centre because it's right on Lake Ontario, and there's also the artists galleries/workshops there.

As somebody else already mentioned, yes, The Distillery District is definitely worthwhile.

Their Zoo is good, although pretty far out East. If there's much snow, then HAHA, good time to see their Snow Leopard. Snow Leopards are pretty rare.

Yes, the Canadian side of Niagara is much better. Not so much the falls themselves, but at least during Summer the Niagara region (Niagara on the Lake, St. Catherine's, etc) looks almost like Tuscany. Think about it - except for the Falls themselves, it's not a prime area for Americans because they'd rather be further South where it's warm, or in NYC, itself, or somewhere else. It is a VERY prime area for Canada, though, as it is about as far South and close to the USA as you can get. The Niagara region is also PRIME WINE COUNTRY for Canada, and you get do a wineries tour - some of them are really good for that and have a great selection. Trying Ice Wine is really awesome - one winery really good for that is Konzelmann's.

I'll post more as I think about them.

Yes, the drinking age is 21.

Why did I remember that incorrectly? Eek.

Maybe because I hardly ever drink.

I'm planning to visit Toronto on Thanksgiving week (I have family there). I made a drive up there once briefly in May of 2008, but I don't remember too much except seeing Niagara Falls on the US side: the view wasn't so good

Isn't it cold as hell up in Toronto at Christmastime?

I bring up Mt. Everest on Eglington East because it is NEPALESE and Indian. The owners there take really great pride in their restaurant. Their sauces are about as good as you will find in any restaurant, anywhere, save only the most exclusive and expensive ones in the world (like Chutney Mary's in London, UK). One way to tell if a Indian Restaurant is good is to see whether or not the sauce for their curries is heterogeneous (does the sauce look like just a clear coat of red, or do you literally see little flakes of different colors and sizes of spices amid the color of the sauce). I ate at one Indian Restaurant on Gerrard East in Little India once, and their Masala sauce was like Hunts Tomato Sauce out of can. Seriously. Mt. Everest is the extreme opposite. Their Tikka Masala (chicken or PANEER) is about the best I've ever had. Their Malai Kofta is GREAT. They also have their special Nepali entrees which are esssentially "mountain food", so very pure and wholesome, and most of them are vegan. And great tasting. I don't know what else is out on Eglington East, but it's one of the main East-West thoroughfares in the city, and probably worth walking a few blocks.

Just walking along the main streets in Toronto is great because of the wide selection of unique shops and the people watching and such. Queen Street West (The Fashion District) is also pretty good for this.

I forgot to mention the #1 green space in Toronto - High Park. Really big park. Better in Summer, obviously, but lots of room for exploration. If you have pink lungs like me, it's very rejuvenating to walk through their a good bit as it's better air quality than the city. There are a number of good restaurants on Bloor Street immediately East of High Park if you want to fill up your tank after a good constitutional in the park. I did that one day after I felt just so run-down and beat-down by my day-to-day 9-5 job making very little $$ and living in a basement. I told myself I was going to take a walk in High Park and eat out afterwards, I did that and found a nice Thai Restaurant in that little strip of Bloor Street that I mentioned, and on a 10 point scale, the way I felt improved by like 5 or 6 points.

ONE LAST THING I FORGOT TO MENTION ONE LAST THING I FORGOT TO MENTION ONE LAST THING I FORGOT TO MENTION

If you do actually visit Toronto, the #1 BEST WAY to get in-the-know on what's going on in the city at any given time is the Weekly Free Magazine (at least it was free when I lived there 2004-2009) is NOW Magazine. (https://nowtoronto.com/) It is a very thoughtful publication that people put a lot of energy into producing. They give great reviews of theatre productions, restaurants, and more. It's also given out for free in magazine racks many places around the downtown core, at least. Best places to check probably inside/outside coffeeshops of which there are plenty (Starbucks, Second Cup, Timothy's World Cafe, Tim Horton's etc). One thing about the magazine that I really respect is that they very rarely hand out superlatives (they rate things on a 1-5 scale of N's, for the magazine's name "Now"), reserving the 5 N rating for only the very few that they feel like deserve it. None of that 4+ star crap that floods Google Reviews for nearly everything in existence. Oh, and has the best weekly Astrology writeups that I've ever seen in a non-specialized publication. The writer actually knows more than a thing or two about Astrology and the writeups not only address each sign fairly well, but also take into account things like transits (what's actually happening, astronomically) and such.
