You should get a black powder flintlock rifle if its for fun. Plus if the world ends you can make your own gun powder and mold your own lead balls and hunt with it

Edit: also you can buy a kit and build it yourself which adds to the fun part.

Edit Edit: also you can dress up like an old time mountain man fur trader and go to those rendezvous things and camp out like the ~1700s for a week with a bunch of old dudes and have tomahawk throwing competitions and muzzle loader shooting competitions and win stuff and drink whiskey at night and hang out and make friends

Shotguns are good I like mine glad I got it. But as others said if you can ar15 or other if in cali/ commie state first. Or get a pump and 10/22 or semi .22 they are cheap and great plinkers.

If you want to own a basic reliable shotgun the 870 is great, I got the super mag myself.

I had a mossberg before, it was inferior.

Obviously you can spend ALOT more money and get a really nice shotgun, but Id rather use that extra money in other things, the 870 is really good.

870s are great, but unless it’s a Police Magnum the newer ones are not it mane

I would get a Mossberg 590, 500, or even Maverick 88

Obviously 12 gauge

Personally I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended

Everyone should have a handgun, shotgun, .22lr/.22mag/.17, and a HP rifle of your liking at least .243 or larger. The AR15 and AR10 are bad ass, but I recommend the “essentials” first. A .17 and .22 mag have a lot of uses. You can get a regular .22 in semi auto too. Ruger makes a couple with drum mags that are pretty good. Bought my daughter a 10/22. Fantastic little plinker.

I have a 12g, but sometimes wish I’d have bought a 20g. With the advancements in ammo, a 20g became much more versatile and you can shoot them far more in a session before you get sore. Get the appropriate choke and good ammo and you have a great gun.

As for AR, I have a Daniel Defense AR10. It’s accurate to at least 900 yards. Shoot that regularly at the big range here, hitting a target the size of a fox. Also have a CMMG AR15 with iron sights. I wanted to keep it close quarters while making my AR10 long range. Screw fancy scopes, iron sights are fast as hell and accurate enough if you practice.

I don’t believe any long gun is good for CQB unless you’re trained. Corners will kill you faster with a long gun, and take longer to put on a target.

870’s (and mossburg 500’s) are a simple / cheap / reliable shotgun with TONS of aftermarket options to customize it to your specific wants and needs. They have sold a bazillion of them for a reason. I have a Marine Magnum that I use for bear protection, and it has operated flawlessly in very adverse conditions.

If you want to go the semi-auto route, the Benelli M2 is a great choice, and the best one for the money ($1300’ish).

But if money is an object, you can get an 870, a 10-22, and a basic AR for about the price of an M2.

Create trust, buy Remington 870 Police, wait for tax stamp approval, enjoy. Best shotgun I have ever owned. SBS (just barely), but incredibly fun to shoot.

Depends how much you want to spend. If wanting a cheap shotgun, get a maverick 88

Otherwise get a benelli m3 if they’re allowed in cuckifornia

But listen to Ikeman and get an ar15 (or mini14 if that’s allowed still)

yes 870's are tried and true been around since 1950 everyone should have an 870

dont use an ar for home defense because you will shoot through multiple layers of drywall and kill your neighbor

This is backwards thinking. A novice defending themselves isn't assaulting an unfamiliar building. The benefits of a firearm that is easily aimed, controlled, and trained on massively outweigh the maneuverability gained at the cost of reducing lethality/accuracy.

Any defensive shotgun load does the exact same thing, while the 5.56 rd loses energy faster.

The 1970s called, they want their home defense advice back.

Ok first of all, imagine not getting one of these

Second, imagine not getting an Italian shotgun:

And third, imagine getting an ugly Glock and not a Beretta or something

But for home defense ranges and situations, doesn’t it make bird shot the ideal load in terms of effective range and over penetration?

I have an 870 but used a Mossberg 500 pump prior. I like the mossbergs safety location much better than the 870. Although you get used to it
