Is 1 hour commute by car too long? Srs

So I just got employed in a city that is about an hour away. But I dont really wanna move there I am fine living in a 60k population town.

Almost all the jobs I have had to this day had a short (15- 20 mins) commute so Im not used to longer.

Will it get tiring?

Depends on the salary. I'd commute if the pay difference is 30-40k. Otherwise I rather not deal with driving 2 hours a day. (Ded fkn Srs)

It's pretty draining, my gf did it for a a few years before we moved into our house. Gas was expensive, even before the gas prices went nuts.

That's 2 extra hours of work everyday (you aren't getting paid for) basically unless you're the personality type that doesn't mind an hour in the car listening to some podcasts or something.

I could never handle driving 2 hours a day for a job. Your 9-5 is now 730ish to 6/630 depending on traffic.

Would have to be an incredible salary and opportunity.

Youโ€™ll be fine for about a month or so. Or until the first accident or flat tire or mattress on the road etc makes it a 2-3 hour commute.

did it for years and it wasn't too bad.


the 1hr commute in the morning gives you time to fully wake up (coffee with podcast/music) which is kinda nice but the 1hr commute home is annoying af. You're tired and just want to be home

I did it for a long time. Wouldn't recommend it. Wear and tear on your vehicle, gas, and lose 2 hours of your limited work day time. Not to mention speed traps, accidents, traffic jams, road rage. Anxiety was always through the roof.

30 mins is the max I personally would commute. If there was a great job opportunity, bunch more money, etc., more than 30 mins away I would still only consider it if there was opportunity to move closer quickly.

Time is our most valuable asset, and the one thing we don't get more of. I don't want to spend a ton of it every day in traffic, dealing with other drivers, getting stressed, etc.

OP the only way I would do that is if there was a very real possibility that I was gonna move closer to the job.

That means it has to pay enough and there has to be nice areas around the job to live.

That commute is 2 hours out of your day every day, and if you work somewhere it snows that's now 3 hours out of your day.
The billionaire and the beggar both have 24 hours in a day.

My commute has been 50 minutes for 16 years. It sucks big time. I've gotten used to it but all that time lost is a bummer. Can't live in the city. Can't afford to work rural.

I do it 6 days a week during fishing season to get to the ocean. It's not bad but I am going to a recreational activity I'd imagine if I was going to work I'd be more upset about it

I did it for a while, got old quick. Would never do it again unless I absolutely need to. To be fair I also hated my bosses at the time and that was a huge factor, might've been different if I enjoyed my job.

Fuk no. I have to commute an hour once a week and it's hell. I couldn't imagine 5 times.

Fooking Jamals weaving in and out of traffic, bubbas tailgating the fook out of you going 15 over in the right lane, Karens drifting out of their lane, Ming Haos driving on the wrong fooking side of the road.

Only a few months left of this chit. Can't wait.

I'd need at least 50k/year more salary to do this 5 times a week.

Mostly this.

Is the salary worth the time/gas vs. getting something closer that pays less? And what sort of commute are we talking about here?

When we lived in DFW near Fort Worth and my ex took a job near Dallas we rented out our house and moved into a rented apartment and then a couple of rental houses because he was not willing to spend that much time driving every day in miserable traffic.

In MI we bought a house about 25 minutes from his job, but the commute was mainly down a rural type road with a higher speed limit and very few lights. It was scenic and kind of a pleasant drive.

Depends on traffic. If there's not much, it's not too bad. If it's stop and go then it's going to be bad.

I've been driving almost an hour for years. Yeah, I don't enjoy wasting 1.5 extra hours of my life driving but I have a good job and I'm not moving closer because the area isn't great. My car gets okay gas mileage but I still spend $50+ a week.

Only thing that gets to me are the *******s on the road. It's gotten worse over the years but most of the time I can set my cruise and relax. But, you have those days where somebody passes you, gets in front of you and slows. Or, somebody takes 2 miles to pass a car because ones doing 66 and the others doing 65.

Time is money. You are spending 2 hours a day driving to and from work, vs the 30 minutes you used to. Is the pay increase worth it. Figure that is time that could be invested elsewhere, friends, gym, family etc

15 minutes commuting is too long. Itโ€™s the most miserable part of the day. I canโ€™t imagine an hour unless Iโ€™m getting paid or able to work (and get paid obviously) while riding the train. Actively fighting traffic to get to an office? No thanks Jeff.

Public transportation commute is at least twice as good as driving... ie a 1 hour driving commute is same to me as a 2 hour public transportation commute and they're both nonstarters

If it was a job I really liked I'd negotiate to do it at most once a week, twice a week in certain conditions
