Describe the most appalling aspects of the culture around you .

Did you get a chance to try the local food? How nice where the people in general?

Is it true the locals like to bang goats & drink camel piss?

What cities?

Does slavery exist there?

I consider myself to be a pretty open-minded guy so nothing really stands out to me as appalling here.

-women in hijabs don’t bother me much, and this custom changes depending on where exactly you are.

- life goes on and people are just out trying to survive in these war-torn locations.

I did try the local food. At our outpost we have locals who run a market that cook and sell us food. While I get the impression the food is white-washed to appeal to us, there are some items that are more traditional.

The people who like the American presence here are nice to us, the people who don’t aren’t. Due to the nature of the conflict here some towns are hostile and some are friendly. So depending on where we are going we know to expect being flipped off, given angry looks, and rocks; Or smiles, waves and the peace sign.

I don’t know anything about banging goats or camel piss. Have never seen a camel in this specific area.

As for cities, I’m in North Eastern Syria. Apart from the cities here I have been to Kuwait and Erbil, Iraq. No slavery in Syria or Iraq as far as I can tell but Kuwait does have some weirdness with their Indian/philipino workers.

I will say that the situation with the millions of Syrians refugees is a very sad one. I have no doubt that many of these Syrians are exploited and trafficked in surronding countries like Turkey.
