Once I was cramming for the bar exam and started getting coffee at the place below my apartment. It’s literally making black coffee then pumping the canister for anyone that wants it.

The dude thought giving two pumps on the coffee dispenser deserved a tip. JFL

I don't think most of them actually do tbh. The cashier doesn't control what the receipt printer does with tip lines.

FWIW if you are ordering takeout from a place that is mainly dine in w/servers then I can see tipping something because odds are good the person who packed up all of your food isn't paid minimum wage and is supposed to be making it up with tips.

But I think that for a business to automatically tack on a tip, or nudge customers to give a tip when they pay is tacky as hell, especially when the workers are paid minimum or better.

If I want to tip I prefer totip cashso that I know that the money is going to the person who is providing the service and isn't being kept by the business owner, or shared out to the entire staff which is what I think happens at fast casual places that are only counter service and automatically prompt you to add a tip percentage when you pay.

I like to tip a little to whoever gets ice for me at the Sonic I go to because I know going to the back and scooping a bunch of ice into a bag is a PITA and I would rather the workers not be annoyed by "that lady in the little blue car who just buys bags of ice all the time".

Tipping is so they dont spit in your food


if the food is already packaged right by the counter then i have zero incentive to tip. they should make a negative tipping button that you can get 10% discount and its paid out of their tip money. I would use that.

Tipping workers was because they were making less than min wage and relied on tips. Theoretically, it helped to keep costs down.

Today, most workers in traditionally tipped professions make as much or more than min wage, so the reason for tipping isnt warranted.

The dishwasher in the back making min wage isnt being tipped, why is the waiter, who's probably being paid more(before tips) being tipped?

Tradition is the only reason.

I used to be a confirmed member of overtipping crew, but after I went to the states last time, the entitlement with which every single employee in the world expects a tip now has made me enjoy not tipping ded srs.

Saw on one receipt at a restaurant (ded srs) "it is customary to tip our servers between 15-25%." It's like, whose customs? Phucking your? LMFAOOO NAH. 10% tip, server tried to super patronizingly thank me for my tip and I locked eyes and said thank you for your service lmfaoo.

Where in the US is this true? I've never seen a waitstaff position that pays minimum wage and definitely never seen one that pays over minimum wage.

Tipping for pick up is the dumbest thing ever. I always tip when I get food delivered to my house. Even dine in, I tip good if service is good.


But for pick up? That I drove in my car? F outta here. Don’t fall for the screen flip bs. Or Order online so you just go there to pick up and no interaction

I tip at fast casual places srs. Inflation is repping everyone hard right now, but especially the workers on the bottom of the food chain. So I don't mind throwing $3 to Jose the illegal making my food when I get paid $60/hr to mostly golf and misc.

3 or 4 years ago when it first started, I never did the tablet tips, but today I kind of feel for those guys.

It's funny, the person clearly sees that you didn't tip them now as well. I can tell they are a a bit alarmed when I specifically go for the "no tip" option, and never get any "thank you" or other conversation after that.

I generally eat at local non-chain restaurants and takeout places that I want to see succeed. I make good money so I pay it forward and throw them a few extra bucks. They didn't do anything extra to deserve it, but I'd rather donate to people who work to provide a service I appreciate than hand it to a homeless person who refuses services I fund with my taxes.

Never tipped at Starbucks once.

I try to save money by picking up my food instead of getting Doordash and yeah they ask for a tip when I checkout?

I feel guilty as I know the restaurants hurt during the pandemic but it starts to get silly at that point.

Had a guy taking my order at a taco spot spin it for the tip and then I declined he said “wow thanks” I just started at him. Normally is say no problem like a smart ass but it caught me so off guard lol

I almost never tip. Around the holidays tho I've dropped twenties into the tip jar at the smaller places that have served me well for the year.

CA isn't exactly the norm. I've always worked in TX where federal minimum wage law is what is followed.

I know the law says that the employer has to make up the difference so that the worker gets $7.25, however if you have had any contact with servers in your life you know that it is not at all uncommon that the server gets shafted + even servers who seem to get decent tips may not do that well after having to "tip out" other workers who are making minimum wage or better.

It's kind of a crap system at this point for probably the bottom 70% to 80% of server positions.

I've said it here plenty of times that I believe a more fair minimum wage system would be:

2 bedroom market rate rent for an area X 3 [minimum income to qualify] X 12 months [1 year] / 2 [two roommates/workers sharing a place] / 50 [standard work weeks in a year] / 40 [full time workweek] =Local Base Wage

$1600 market rate rent X 3 = $4800 a month X 12 = $57,600 a year / 2 workers = $28,800 / 50 weeks = $576 / 40 hours =$14.40 an hour Local Base Wage

Yeah, I know the "minimum wage is bad" crew and the arguments. However so long as we have a government system that makes taxpayers responsible for making up the difference when workers' compensation is insufficient to meet basic needs I think we need to have a reasonable Base Wage.

Don't like homeless people? Make work pay.

Yes, I get that many homeless are addicts/crazy/etc. That doesn't mean that having all of your productive people earning at least enough money to have a home won't bring up the overall prosperity of an area.

Notice that this could begin as federal legislation, but it isn't "one size fits all" and wouldn't require for Omaha to pay the same wage as Chicago, or for Asheville to pay the same wage as Boston.

No, it isn't. Prices are artificially inflated

I've known dozens of servers, I used to be one in college, employers are not "shafting" them, you really think a business is going to risk getting shut down + heavy fines over a few dollars, just no

In reality they're getting $7.25 + tips on the very low end


You've been reading too many stories online, the majority of servers out there are making double minimum wage or more; I used to take home $200+/day & that was back in the 00's
