elbow pain during dips

asking for a friend

he's just started last couple weeks, has gone from being able to do 0 - > 15 reps

in the final reps of most sets (with 2-3 RIR) he says his elbow feels "loose" or "cold". Usual points to the lateral side of the elbow not the inner joint connecting the arm

Could this be lack of grip/forearm strength for stability or another weakness? His form is pretty good. Could it be a bone structure issue similar to how some ppl's shoulders hurt from dips?

How to correct? reps*

You probably have poor form if your elbows are hurting. I have bad elbow tendonitis in one arm, but Dips feel no paid whatsoever.

Maybe try assisted dips for a while until the form is correct and your muscles around the tendon are strong again?

pretty substantial jump, going from 0-15 in a short time. id guess he's using some ligament elasticity to propel them up from the bottom rather than placing the load on the pecs and triceps.

get him on an assisted dip machine and ask him where he feels each rep. if he responds near the elbow that's your answer.

id also recommend him doing less reps as unless im reading wrong he probably doesn't know how RIR work without being at least semi trained.

I think its all right here. Just because strength is there to do 15 doesnt mean the rest of the body has caught up.

Bad form with dips as well with scull-crushers can play havoc with the elbows, the secret is to keep the elbows in as close to the body as you can.
