US tells them that even though the foundation of their (previously 4th largest) economy is due to cheap russian energy, they're not allowed to use it
germany goes along with it at first but realizes they wood face total annihilation if they cut it off and go back to burning horse dung
US realizes that germany is talking to russia through back channels and might circumvent american wishes
US then blows up the fkn primary pipelines and tells germany nbd, you can buy dramatically more expensive natgas from us that we will liquefy, put on a ship, send to you, you then have to turn it back into a gas (which you currently don't have the capacity to do because it's dumb af) before use
