Misc managers: Is an employee showing up to work drunk an automatic termination?

Or would you tell him to go home, give a stern warning (maybe write up) and give him a second chance? Given that this person was for the most part a good employee and never done something like this before.

Immediate termination has been a policy at every job i've ever worked at.

and it should ESPECIALLY be the case if you're working a blue collar job and lifting or working with heavy machinery

I worked in some boiler room, wolf of Wall Street environment for a few years

We used to go out with management till 4am and then show up hammered for 8am

One time I was brought into the bosses corner office, because I was exceptionally bad (same suit as day before, messy hair, bloodshot eyes, smelled like booze) he told me to go home and sleep it off and come back after lunch

Looking back I believe I should have been fired, just terrible behaviour

old phuckker at my previous job showed up to work one day a couple hours late and hungover as fuk. he walks up to our boss and burps right in his face srs

Depends on the job.

If it’s a safety issue and it’s part of the employment agreement possibly.

But you’d still need some way of reliably proving they were intoxicated or drug affected.

Otherwise best you could do is a warning but it probably wouldn’t even count as a strike unless you can prove it.

I’ve never heard of a workplace (outside some exceptions) that can do an on the spot drug test. The unions would have a field day.

I mainly worked in healthcare (hospitals) and pharmaceutical manufacturing and in the US (in healthcare) we most certainly do on the spot testing if there is reasonable suspicion. In fact, if you are accused of being intoxicated/under the influence and they want to test you and you refuse they consider it Admission of Guilt and you'll still get fired.

but, in my case we're literally mixing and distributing morphine/dilaudid/********/******** to patients, so they're far more strict about drug testing as oppose to some generic office job.

We test for drugs and alcohol. First offense they get to choose between rehab and resigning (if they resign they get severance, if they refuse to resign they are fired for gross misconduct and get the legal minimum in that country). If they go to rehab then fail a second test, they are done.

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

If it's a server job or restaurant maybe a write up and a warning, especially if it's at night. Retail also likely a warning because you need staff.

If it requires any sort of machinery work or trade, absolutely sent home and likely fired unless it is a one off. Ask them why the hell they would think about doing that, especially if they drove to work.

Yeah really depends on the type of job. If it's a chill office job where you get pissed after work with everybody and show up fukked once you could obviously just warn them but in healthcare or working with heavy machinery it would warrant an immediate termination.

Yes. Im drunk at work all the time but show no signs of it as I'm a functional alcoholic. Imo, don't bother showing up unless you are at my level.

Remember this sales dude named Chuck. Dude would come in drunk and sell ice cubes to Eskimos. Nobody could compete with Chuck when he was drinking, so they gave him a pass. Then some corporate bigwig came in. Dude was such a poindexter. So Chuck had been drinking you see, and started making fun of him, I just remember him doing the Chicken dance in the service drive making fun of the corporate guy and then he said "You can take this job and shove it" and started singing the song. Chuck quit that day.

Policy is automatic termination, but depending on the value of the employee exceptions will be made. Though at the very least they are getting a write up and sent home.

I can honeslty say first hand that it cannot be sustained. I actually received two promotions from drinking on the job because of my charismatic skills while doing corporate sales. You eventually become sloppy and not as effective. Alcohol has an expiration date (ded srs).

Like everyone says, it depends on the job.


Plus what was the time and situation. Was he drunk at 8am? That might be a bigger issue. Maybe if he came in drunk at the late shift he could get a warning.

Of course, any drinker worth their salt could be drunk and the boss wouldnt notice. This person must be an immature drinker.

It would be at my job. They are supposed to send you straight to get a piss and breath test.... However I think depending on who it is, it could be overlooked.
