Cable Rows are the equivalent to the smith machine for bench.

Yeah do deadlift if you wanna strengthen your spinal erector. If you are trying to get big, it's the biggest waste of time.

How are lat pulldowns better than pullups tho? Strong lifts btw. What's your height?

Pullups mostly trains upperback, requires coordination of body around the arms/hands (waste of energy), difficult to add load to long-term (progressive overload), difficult to track with weight changes and fluctuations, disproportionately hard for jacked dudes and overweight individuals. Whereas lat-pulldowns mostly (traditionally) trains upperback, but is easy to adjust grip width/placement to target lats, can easily adjust body however you want to match the motion you want, better resistance profile to get to failure, easy to add load to long-term and easy to track overtime and accomodates for any strength level/size of individual.

tldr: Pullups are a great exercise to do if you want to display your physical prowess and assert your dominance over other gym bros. If you want to grow your lats, go over to the cable stack and do some narrow pulldowns

OP is right, though. Deadlifting is the unquestioned champion of ego liftingcels.

I've seen chicks who look like they weigh about a buck fifty pull 2+ plates quite easily for reps on deadlifts.

It doesn't do chit for building mass. There are many much better alternatives that are far less taxing on the CNS one can do instead. Lmao at the retards who used to try selling deadlifts as some "whole body muscle mass building" lift when they are actually doing bro beach muscle lifts 90% of the time they are off camera.

i just do deads for ego and because i'm built for them, but I do get sore in my lats way more from near max deads than i've ever gotten from rows or pullups
Lifts:
Squat: 460x1
Bench: 400x1
Deadlift: 575x1
OHP: 250x2
Weight: 180 lbs.

Don't have heroes; look up to no one. Because as long as someone's leading the way, the best you'll ever be is second.

Depends on what you use it for.

Smith machine is GOAT for calf raises.

It can also be good for rows if you use them *properly*.

Well....typ misc response. I will blow your mind with this one. I actually had true low-t at the time of the pic but did not discover for another year. Not just 'low-t' but true hypo-gonadal. My test levels were BELOW the bottom of the scale. I had suffered a TBI and it most likely injured my pituitary which signals test production. I was also hypo thyroid. I went on TRT after and been on since. I also bumped up a few times with what most would call 'beginner' levels. I could not really tell the difference. But at my age I am not willing or interested in carrying muscle or strength that I can not maintain at natural hormone levels.

Going to be 50 in 2 months.

No BS. Believe if you want. 2012-ish Pic of leanest I ever went naturally. I was low 190s' (5'9) in these pics. I really started to shed mass getting any leaner.

Then contrast 7 years later non-nattie 45yo

And to go waaay back. Me at 18 and then 21 after only 3 years of training and 45lbs heavier.....Yes 100% natural.

I disagree. They give you thickness like no other, but also outside powerlifting meets, I did all my DL work DOH w/ straps. Deads are a HUGE lat activator. Like I said, they were the foundation of my back workouts. I was never a 'body builder'. I trained for strength. Deads build backs. (and most everything else!)

And yeah I know another dude with low test that built a great physiques, kinda makes you realize that you can still do fine with low test when it comes to muscle building.

Low to mid 190s at 5’9 at around 11%BF is highly suspicious,

deadlifts are amazing for building a thick back. it literally works out your whole back

it is the only back workout where you can overload crazy weight. you are literally pulling 300-500 lbs of weight off the floor using your back. can't do the same for rows, lat pull downs now, can you?

I do pull ups because I like being able to pull up. How I move myself and have control over it is what I go for.

Rope climbing using only arms is now one of my goals. No idea if that builds a huge back, but if there ever comes a day where I have to climb a rope.....yup

I don’t know man. Ever since I bought a trap bar and can safely crank out more reps and sets my back has been feeling better. Big bonus is that I can safely lift with an exaggerated hip hinge and target the hell out of my hammies.

Also what one poster said. Going heavy on deads kills my lats the next day.

Trap bar deadlifting is 100x superior to straight bar in every way. Srs.
