What are your favorite indies this past decade?

AAA's are great and all, but you can't forget about the little guy. Many of the smaller games have been a blast to play, and I've racked up more hours on some of them than the big AAA games. Some on my favorites in no particular order:

1. Enter the Gungeon - This was a game changer for me. Twin stick shooter rogue-lite that just gets better the more you play. very challenging, but so silly and fun with a lot of charm. Everything about this game is gun related, and there are even guns from other games that make appearances. A must play imo.

2. Shovel Knight - Somehow they managed to take the simple, old school side scroller game and make it perfect. I waited a while to get it even though I knew it was getting rave reviews. The concept seemed so simple. After buying it though, I understood the hype. It's just a really solid game.

3. Hades - Another rogue-lite on the list. Top down action packed game with lots of story and great art. I'm sure you're all familiar with this one, and I can't wait for the sequel.

4. Into the Breach - Rogue like with mechs and bugs. I revisit this one the most on the list. Isometric turn based strategy. Simple concept, makes you think carefully about your next move, and lots of ways to customize your mechs. Excellent in short bursts, as you can "beat" the game in about 30 minutes.

5. Katana Zero - Short and sweet cyberpunk/samurai action with time slowing shenanigans. Great soundtrack and story. I'm ready for a sequel.

6. Stardew Valley - Remember Harvest Moon? Take that, make the graphics worse, and toss on some cave exploration. Describing it makes it sound like Rune Factory actually. It's kinda like Rune Factory, but less gay.

7 Slay the Spire - Card game rogue like. If it's your cup of tea, it will probably be like crack. It's come out on mobile, so perfect for on the go or on the toilet. Ascend the spire, get mad and call the game bs when you die, and start right back again. Four characters with their own specialized decks and abilities. Top tier replayability.

Your turn gaming misc.

Slay the Spire is a good pick, that's an amazing game. I'm not sure if Divinity: Original Sin counts as an indie game but I'd put that one if you do count it.

Besides that I play a lot of tower defence so I'd list games like Gemcraft, Bloons TD and Kingdom Rush, but that's a very specific niche genre. Grim Dawn will be my ARPG pick. But again, I'm not very interested in whether something is considered Indie or not, I just play whatever I like.

Hades
Is Hellblade indie?
Does Devolver still count as indie? If so Deaths Door was incredible
Tunic
Immortals: Fenix Rising
H1Z1 or DayZ
Castle Crashers

I don't know what counts as an Indie these days, seems like every game is backed by some huge company

Bro... you're the one who I listened to with Golf Story and I'm not a huge gamer but that game was fun and great. Just hearing about this Sports Story and I'm glad I just found out about it as I don't have long to wait.

Was originally planned for spring 2021 and got delayed indefinitely. I had to stop thinking about it because I would just get sad.

Think Sims but scifi space western edition. Any colonists you get can spawn with a huge variety of strengths, weaknesses, and mental attributes (cannibal, pyromaniac, scholar, etc...). You usually just try to grow and keep your colony alive while letting little stories play out with the colonists (they can get married, murder eachother, hate eachother, etc...), and your camp has to deal with all kinds of dangers like raiders, alien wildlife, weather, (etc...; you getting tired of the ellipses yet?). Main appeal is all the random stories that play out, whether or not you manage to sustain your colony. No two runs are the same. The game is run by a few different AI "story tellers" that throw random chit at you. I'd say this and hades are my two favorite indies of the last decade, with this winning out.

The past decade? Maybe Descenders. That game is just so much fun for me and it just never gets old, one of those games I can just always play when I am in the mood. They really hit the perfect formula for a mountain biking game.

Runner up would maybe be Skater XL, it's kinda rough around some edges, but overall it's delivered a fun and surprisingly accessible skating experience during an era when skateboarding games hit a real low.

Outer wilds? If so, do yourself a favor and go in blind. It’s the best game you can’t talk about, since you’d be robbing someone of one of the finest games ever.

The ending wrecked my feels, the only game that even comes close is Nier Automata. I had to go sit outside for a while. Once you beat outer wilds go watch the YouTube videos of people full on sobbing at the ending.

Went in blind and I'm a few hours in brah. Mind. fuking. blown.

Any of you brahs that haven't played it, do not open the below spoiler. Even if you don't think you'd care.

Spoiler!
A legit space exploration game!? This chit should be everywhere. I've never even heard anyone talk about it but it's one of the most original game experiences I've ever had. All the little science anomalies you come across are creative touches too.

brb die to the star going supernova mid exploration
brb land in the core of a gas giant with immense gravity just for a gas cyclone to lift me into space and have gravity smear me across some rocks
brb incinerated by some unknown space anomaly ghost fire
brb entire ship eaten by space angler fish inide some kind of impossible pocket of space within orbiting giant seed portal

Ho lee chit

This game is so good I've already googled for a sequel (unfortunately, there isn't any sequel planned). I also had no idea it was by Annapurna Interactive. These guys always make fantastic game experiences. 12 minutes, Gone Home, and Journey were all dope. I hear Stray was great too.

Good to hear they stick the landing too. I can tell it'll be a 10/10 game from beginning to end.

This is already the best game of theirs I've ever played though. Pretty hyped they're making one of the new Silent Hill games.

Das it brah. The game is amazing and makes you feel so small and alone in the universe, and how nothing bigger than yourself seems to care about you.

Then the story, the MUSIC, the incredible genius reveals of secrets that have been right under your nose the entire game oh lawd. Probably the greatest video game ever made and legit like 10 people made it.
