I doubt the average American man can even do ten proper push ups.

Push ups with good form, probably about 50-100
Pull Ups with good form, about 10-20
sit ups - all of them

Push ups get easy to do fast. So a fit person who maybe doesn't particularly emphasis doing push ups will probably be able to do about 50 clean push ups, but with a little effort that number would go up huge in like a month.
Pull Ups are trickier. If you are fit but scrawny, you can do a lot. If you are fit but weigh more you won't be able to do as many. Progress on pull ups seems to hit a wall for people as well, where it becomes hard to add more clean reps even with dedication.
Sit ups are easy and an untrained person could probably do hundreds of them. A fit person could do them all day, cause even when they become difficult they are still doable.

So for an average man that wasn't an ex athlete or anything, I think he should be able to do about 50 pushups, maybe 60 situps a min, and 8-10 full dead hang pullups, and a mile time of at least close to 7 min. to be considered in good physical shape. If you can do all of those then you're in good shape and on a good path. Anything above and beyond that is just icing on the cake.

I earned my NSW contract in late 2015 and those "competitive" numbers are fairly accurate compared to what I saw, minus the swim. 9:00 was always the competitive time, I never saw it listed as 8 minutes before.

But the thing that made the physical screening test hard was that you do it all back to back to back and the form has to be perfect. You get ten minutes to change out after the swim and then two minutes on/two minutes off for the push/sit/pull, another ten minute rest, and then straight into the run. But that PST is just to earn a SEAL contract and ship out to bootcamp. Pre-BUD/S, BO, and BUD/S are all completely different animals from the PST.

Either way though, in my opinion every man should be able to easily hit those minimum numbers for the push/sit/pull

Your numbers sound pretty damn solid. The pushups and situps on the SEAL PST are timed for two minutes. Technically the pull-ups are too, but in my experience they never actually timed it because no one is doing pull-ups for two minutes straight.

I always thought it was weird that they had those minimum numbers because even though that's "passing" the PST, you're not going to actually earn a SEAL contract unless you're hitting those competitive numbers.
