I'm not arguing that the US military is weak, but the entire Afghanistan operation was a major failure. If the US had actually gained any ground in Afghanistan and made even a slight dent in the Taliban's forces, they wouldn't have just popped up, strong as ever, as soon as you guys got in your planes and left.

They played the long game and won, simple as that, just like they did with the Russians. Short of nuking the entire country, there's nothing the US could have done to make the exit any less of a failure after 20+ years of making almost no progress at all.
