It must've really sucked for George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life' at the end

Think about it. His entire life consisted of helping others, changing people's lives for the better, and was to be remembered positively by countless people.

Now, after that ending, he'll forever be remembered as a guy who needed a hand out, couldn't even successfully take care of his family without help, and needing everyone's pity to get out of a financial jam. His legacy completely tarnished. It almost would've been better if he committed suicide and made it look like an accident. At least he still would have some respect from people, not just forever known as some loser.
