Need advice. Moving From MS to WV panhandle

Got a job opportunity in WV. I'm pretty sick of MS in general so i'm looking to GTFO. Place in WV want me there to open their store. I'm getting almost 4k as a relocation incentive (mileage included). Anyway, anyone ever done this before? I guess i'm gonna get like a 10' or probably 12' rental truck for my stuff and a car carrier to pull my car. But i really dont need such a big truck. I could probably fit all my stuff in a van but i dont think it would pull my car.

Should i just take the bare essentials and buy more when i arrive or go with the plan I have now? I feel like it would be dumb to just go with whatever i can fit in the car.

I'm still working on a place to stay though. The town i'm going to is almost 30k people, so slightly bigger than where i live now. I'm fine with this. I'm justnervousnervousscared. I'm going alone and the only one i will know is the reflection in the mirror.

Please guys, help me if you have any advice. I feel like this is too big for me

back isnt terrible. I lost 60 lbs a few years ago and got back in the work force. Its still bothersome but i can bear it.

There is even less going on in my town. I'm planning on using this opportunity to open doors. I dont plan on staying but i am committed there for 6 months at least


Anyone actually moved a long distance? I dont have any ideas other than a rental truck and a tow set up.

Moved 1500 miles from Cali to Nebraska. Every move I've made I've been amazed at how much chit I have and how much chit I could do without when I inevitably purge 80% of it. I'd say this is a good time to get rid of unnecessary junk lol.

To stop yourself from bitching out, imagine 10 years from now reflecting on where you're at. Would you be better off sticking around, or would you be better off taking a new opportunity? If you have kids, do the decision that'd make them proud of you. Also, if you're young still this is THE TIME to fuk up. You don't want to be 54 and wishing you took more chances but just past your prime, that's just fukking sad. If you're young and fall flat, you have time to fix it, a lesson learned, and a story to tell.

Sounds based, and I wouldn't be scared to pull with a rental since who gives a chit if the trans gets beat up, which is what 99% of towing wear and tear is. High trans temps. Just rent a van and an aluminum car trailer and roll

Not a helpful reply, but I wondering just what possible town there would be in the WV panhandle that would be even as big as 30k, never mind WV's economy which, judging by their state being about the only one in the nation to lose population over...not sure how long a time frame...but you would have to be one of very few people to move there.

If you're in the WV panhandle, though, you'd be close enough to DC/Baltimore to where that pretty big metro area could spill over and give the economy of the WV panhandle a little bit of a boost.

Is there nobody you can leave your possessions with and take only what you can in your car? Would it hurt you to make a return trip in a month or two or so to get the rest? You could take a Greyhound (not exactly fun) or fly or something and then bring the rest in a 1-way rental. Or would a return trip in your car get just about everything?

Very Ghetto. My town just hasnt grown much int he past few decades. We had a jack ass mayor and racist city council who basically stopped the town from growing at all. I'm really just tired of enforcing the rules that corporate puts on us and being accused of racism. Corp will ask about it but they never really say much more since its theirs rules we are enforcing.

oh i'm not worried about it. Just not looking forward to the 12 hour drive. I dont think a van would be able to handle my car. Both Budget rental and Uhaul wont let me rent a 10' box truck to haul a car. They will only let me get a 12" truck. ANd also no car dolly's. Just the full trailer.

Wheeling. Its right on the ohio river and o hio is on the other side. Pittsburg is 1 hour east and Columbus is 2 hours. Point pleasant WV (where the mothman sightings happened) is 2.5 hours away. I think i'll just take care of it all in 1 trip. I think it owuld be more expensive to break it up like that. But i did consider it but dismissed it quickly. Ive got more stuff than can fit in my car. Not by much. Car cant tow so a chase vehicle is needed. But i'm going alone so id have to find another driver. Might as well tow.

No offense OP, but those are two of the most poverty states in the entire country. Cool that you have a job opportunity lined up, but aren’t there other locations? Why West Virginia?

While the cost of living is very low statewide, the only part of WV I’d ever consider living in would be the eastern panhandle near Charles Town, because then you’re on the outskirts of the DC metro area.

From my many visits and drives through, the rest of the state is very sad. Complete economic devastation, the people walk around drugged out or drunk, looking either obese or literally malnourished. Plus if your family is in Mississippi, moving to a state with basically all of the same problems plus colder weather and no roots seems like a downgrade. If proximity to Pittsburgh is the draw, I’d rather be in Pennsylvania.

If I could move from IL to CA with just an altima filled with some bags and stay in a random house with a family on a whim without a job and about 13k to my name, then you can do this OP. Fookin drove 3 days alone, staying in random motels, and now have stories to tell.

Just bite the bullet. I just wrote out my options and then logically went through what is the best possible scenario via cost and time. Whatever makes the most sense to you in those regards you should go with.

You'll be surprised when you give yourself the opportunity to be courageous and take risk. You're more capable as a man than you think.

Whenever I drove southeast from Ohio, my rule was we fill up on gas and food/water at the ohio WV border, and there is no stopping in WV

Cool, I have a buddy I've known since the 4th grade that lives in the Mathiston/Maben area. I think that's about 30-45 mins from Starkville. I lived in Jackson, Madison, Brandon area for 37 years. Left a few years ago when my parents died.

Not sure if West Virginia is an upgrade over Mississippi, but if you’re only committed for six months it could be a nice change of scenery as you figure out your path something bigger and better

West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states. I just moved practically the opposite of what you did, except I have a great wife. She drove the car, I drove the uhaul. It isn’t too hard, just sucks packing everything up.

Seize the opportunity to experience new life. You can only regret not doing it

Well, i dont have a ton of stuff at all. I'm taking only what I can move into my new place on my own. I work for Longhorn Steakhouse. Applebees is terrible. At least in my part of the woods. The cheap alcohol and wings attracts.....questionable crowds

Man I wish i could have someone follow me in my car. If i still had my truck, i'd just buy a trailer and pull that (but i'd have no where to store it in WV). So now, the best scenario for me is to tow the car

looks lik i might not be going. I am supposed to move next week but i cant get approved for a 1BR apartment because they require a monthly income of 3x rent. A lot of these places require renters insurance (which i guess i see why) but they also charge a fee JUST TO APPLY, and a convenience fee or an administration fee. WTF??? They are just nickeling and diming everyone
