Here in the UK it’s one of the best jobs you can get without a degree in terms of pay, job security and pension scheme, lots of room for progression etc. with amazing benefits including free train travel and perks.

Most job roles are safety critical especially if you work as a conductor, train driver, signaller etc.

We also get good rates for working weekends and overtime. The only downside is dealing with the low IQ general public if you’re frontline facing.

We also have strongest alpha militant unions in country who back us up so it’s hard to lose your job unless you do something stupid or dangerous.


AFAIK the only kinda jobs I hear for similar roles in Murica is working for Amtrak as it’s a passenger service but I don’t know if they get anywhere near the benefits we get.

from what I understand it is high-paying but I don't think it has much appeal for most as the train lines are probably much different here in a much much bigger country than the UK. prolly like being a truckdriver. however I bet if you have connections its ez money here.

My friend does it here in USA. It’s pretty good pay, really good pension. Can be super long hours and out of town all the time obviously. He seems to like it. Would be cool to ride through the western states here in the US on a train.

The railway infrastructure is very big in the the UK and most of Europe, that millions of people use so it’s impossible to go bankrupt.

LOL today I had a manager from a locomotive repair company reach out to me while I'm job searching in Las Vegas. I found out that Caterpillar engines are out in some of those too (I'm a Caterpillar engine Tech for a company in Wyoming).

Think we have 115k employees with a 60 million population. However we’re divided into 28 different train operating companies.

I’m assuming the trains only travel long distances across major cities and you don’t have commuter services which stops in small towns etc?

Good for you on the job. Amtrak sucks balls and the entire railway system in America is very poorly managed. Which is a huge shame, because there's really no good excuse that Americans can't travel by railway systems at little better than we do. They are union jobs so they get paid alright, that being said their Uncle Joe was recently in a huge fight with the railway unions and basically told the unions to go fukkkkk themselves, so do with that info as you will.

Yeah our Unions are currently in dispute with government atm because they plan to close down ticket offices, take conductors/guards off trains so we’ve been striking a lot lately.

It’s not really the pay but how the government are trying to take away are great terms&conditions, enhancements and benefits.

I have a place that has train tracks in the woods behind it. The train usually comes at night and everytime i hear it i think of the conductor driving it and that song "midnight train" song by Journey. Anyway, I think conductors are cool.

Rail pays decent here it’s just not common. Most of our tracks are for freight transport. Amtrak sucks. Expensive and poorly managed for what it is.
