Anyone get a Discectomy Surgery?
My best friend has been dealing with herniated disc since September. No pain killers but really bad pain from the disc hitting his sciatic nerve.
He has a hard time doing basic functions and can’t even go to a restaurant because he can’t sit down for very long.
Basically limited to work from home either standing at his desk or laying down with laptop on his lap.
He did an epidural shot in his back and he’s been doing physical therapy for just a few weeks. He was basically just resting it until the beginning of this year.
Everything I’ve ever heard anecdotally is to NEVER do back surgery. I’ve only heard horror stories of it making it worse.
He’s told me it’s supposed to be a minor surgery and they are only going to shave down the side of the disc that is bulging into the static nerve to release the pain.
I am very skeptical and think he should exhaust every avenue of treatment before surgery, but he’s eager to get past this.
Wondering what the misc doctors think of this .

Was basically crippled in my left leg due to a disc pressing on my nerves. Could hardly even stand or walk because I’d just lose feeling in my leg and fall. Tons of bed rest, physio therapy for 6 months and ate an anti inflammatory diet (look it up) and started yoga and I was back to myself. I still have flare ups on occasion but can manage and treat them myself with yoga/diet/therapy.
The surgeon I met with told me that the surgery was only a 50% chance to fix it and it could end up making it worse.

Did you ever do another MRI/ X ray to see if the disc actually went back into place or are you just taking the relief of pain as a win?
