is it true low speed incline cardio = same as running? (saw on tik tok)

Some thott said "bet you get way more shredded doing low speed walking @ 12-15 incline for 20min a day x 5 days / week than running. Shredded by summer. Same results as running".

Is this true??

(I talked to a competitor friend, basically BS'ed me said its true, given caloric deficit.)

Then I questioned HiiT keeping your metabolism up longer... which responded with not scientifically proven it does, and with that, there's longer recovery time, thus making it equal?

I don't think that's mathematically accurate.

Incline requires more energy but there's a minimum pace required to burn the same or more energy than running on flat.

Whichever gets your heart rate/oxygen higher is burning more calories.

I stopped jogging due to knee problems and only did Incline on the treadmill it gets you tired faster, also the stair master is a good one too, you will burn more calories and exert more energy without having to do sprinting.

Sprinting is a good way to get injured especially as you get older, you dont want to strain or pull a muscle.

more smarter as you get older.

wait, people don't run on incline when doing treadmill? Running flat on treadmill is extremely inefficient. And walking can't be compared to running, period.

Not the same, but IMO the ratio of calories burned:misery is much better.

no way can it be equal. check your heart rate and report back.

It's the same as going for a run outside vs on the treadmill. outside is harder

Incline walking is all I did when I decided I no longer wanted to be obese. This was 8 years ago before dumbass tiktok, but the idea is the same. Incline at 15, speed at 2.5-3.0, walked for about 45 minutes a day. I do 15 minutes a day now just for a tiny bit of help maintaining a slight deficit.

This is the correct answer.

Whatever your personal reasoning is for doing cardio, the most effective form of it will be the form you hate the least, and thus are consistent and willing/able to put in appropriate levels of effort.

Based on our anatomy alone you should not jog at all and do heavy incline at a fast walk for 30+ minutes and then do HIIT at a different point in the day for 10-15. We are predation hunters meaning we walked everywhere until we saw prey then used a Burst of speed to attack then if the prey was injured walked behind it until it died.

Train and eat like a hunter, sprint, walk, lift heavy, eat meat, veg and fruit, and you will reach peak physicality. Study like a philosopher on top of that and help others achieve their goals too and you will be peak human. We’re all gonna make it

The caveman chit is retarded af. You realize most humans gave that chit up like 10,000 years ago right?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_agriculture

The notion that we need to go back to hunter-gatherer ways because it's "natural" doesn't make sense at all. Humans are continually adapting and evolving. Your physiology has NOTHING in common with a human from 10,000 BC.

yeah that tik tok chick said this is likely trying to take credit for something that is already known, this why tik tok is annoying they try to go viral with stuff like this

One of the most taxiing things I did was something called Jacobs Ladder, this bad boy is the best if you want to get quick taxing cardio in short amount of time.

Lol, you know how long evolution takes for significant gene mutations and then the spreading of that mutation?

Yeah, we're different but the fundamentals of our biomechanics are the same. That being said, we weren't just designed for burst speed. One of our advantages over other species is stamina and the ability to regulate body temperature.

Obviously that was a little bit of hyperbole on my part. But this obsession with trying to align your lifestyle with that of a prehistoric hunter-gatherer is so fuking dumb I can't stand it.

It depends how fast you run. If you're like my Cross Country friends that train for 10Ks and run at least at a 7 min mile pace for long distance, I doubt incline walking will get you there. You're just expending so much more energy in a shorter period of time that it has to burn more calories in a given time interval.

For the rest of us who aren't runners and are more focused on lifting/aesthetics, I do find incline walking to be way more efficient for burning cals. I've been doing incline walking at level 15 at 3-3.2 MPH and have found I burn more calories than I do running for the same 20 min period at 6 MPH with way less pain/misery.

Also, NGL, find it cringe that things are "discovered" on Tik-Tok that have been known forever. Like pretty much anyone who worked out before could see that you burn a lot, lot, lot more calories at a steepish incline on the treadmill than you do on flat ground

The notion that we need to go back to hunter-gatherer ways because it's "natural" doesn't make sense at all. Humans are continually adapting and evolving. Your physiology has NOTHING in common with a human from 10,000 BC.
I've never read so much wrong in one post. So its common knowledge that most humans were still hunter gatherers until about 5000 BC, with most of the world still making the transition over the next 4000 years until widespread civilization took hold,, and then half of the America's was still doing that **** well into the 1800's so your "physiology has nothing in common" argument holds no water. Afterwards we had agriculture but most people still hunted for meat for a long time. Additionally how do you think that agriculture was performed? Walking around carrying heavy **** and then sometimes having to sprint because the sheep got out of the pen. AND we still walked fuking everywhere. We still used those predation skills to kill other humans as well. Walk to enemy village, sprint in, kill everyone, walk out carrying heavy loads of conquered resources. Today's military still performs mostly the same way, sure they drive you too the combat zone but then you get out, go on patrol all day, maybe get in a quick fire fight, walk back to HUMVEE caryying gear.

Our basis for travel has not changed much if at all. No one is suggesting you go back to being a hunter gatherer, I'm suggesting you train and eat like one and you will be in much better shape than most. Arnold lifted heavy then went and did springs on the beach with Franco. You might not like it but it is the proper way to train.

I wouldn't expect critical thinking from a no avi ****git though.

This is true you can lose body fat and lean without even working out by cutting calories.

But or health its best to eat clean and do some cardio. sedentary lifestyle is not healthy

Alright so from your posting style I already know I'm dealing with an uneducated fool so this will be my last response. This isn't an argument about walking. This is an argument about you trying to model your life on that of a hunter-gatherer's. You were born in a modern hospital and pumped full of drugs that were the result of modern medicine and technology. You were raised on processed grains and you still consume them even though you think they are bad for you. Your very circadian rhythms are fundamentally altered due your modern lifestyle. You're not a caveman or barbarian hunting wild boar, You never were. You are the next step in evolution of an agrarian, technologically-advanced species. It was all over before it began.

So you change the argument to try and save face and call me an uneducated fool? LOL at thinking our base anatomy has changed since the hunter gather days. And trying to conflate being raised in the modern world with how you should live. I rarely eat processed grains and its well known that people that minimize that intake are healthier than those who don't. I'm guessing from your obvious irateness that you are fat. Fatty mcfatpants over here mad he's physically, mentally and spiritually weak. Good news for your ignorant ass though, it's never too late to make a change. Stop rotting and get out there and live life correctly.

Just use a heart rate monitor. Find the range for the results you're seeking and keep it there, doing whatever form of cardio you enjoy.

Layne norton does not agree cardio is a waste of time.

Calories are what matters.
Youll burn more calories if you can sustain an activity longer.

Theres probably a greater tolerance to incline walking vs running, thus likely youll be able to burn more calories during a session due to performing walking longer. Realistically, running is going to burn more calories in the same period of time for people who are well conditioned due to the pace/mechanics of walking being capped off. But still, likely can get close to threshold for incline walking at very high angles.

For most out of shape people, incline walking will hit this point.

There is a big difference between walking on a treadmill and walking on a treadmill at peak incline. There is a strong argument to be made that if you put a treadmill on #15 and power walk it for 1 mile it will be as difficult (or more so) then running a mile at a regular pace.

If you've ever hiked a mountain it can be pretty brutal going uphill for extended distances. Even at a leisurely pace.

Some humans (Certain tribes in Mexico and African tribes) have mastered the art of endurance running. Literally running down an animal until its too tired to continue then harvesting it up close. Humans are certainly capable of running extreme distances.

But I do agree walking long distances with short sprints/bursts of speed is most likely the idea for health and over-all athleticism. There is a reason why most marathon runners look like ****. Aside from Cameron Hanes I can't think of any other long distance runners that actually have a decent physique.

Then I questioned HiiT keeping your metabolism up longer... which responded with not scientifically proven it does, and with that, there's longer recovery time, thus making it equal?

Help!
It can be true given a bit more context. HIIT is stressful on the body and has an impact on recovery, which will lead to less output during lifting sessions. Your lifting sessions are your #1 way to tell your body to keep all of the muscle that you've packed on, and your fat free mass (muscle, brain, heart tissue, etc) is what makes up your BMR. Other things like eating enough protein and hormone levels can effect how much muscle versus fat you burn.

So "yes" I have had more long term success cutting just incorporating incline walking and elliptical stuff at low-med intensity while training hard and eating properly than I ever had when I used to do HIIT.

But if you were in a vacuum and just compared "low speed walking @ 12-15 incline for 20min a day x 5 days" vs "20 mins 5 days a week of HIIT" the HIIT would blow it out of the water from a calories burned perspective. The question then becomes, do you have the willpower to diet and train while doing HIIT? when you're dropping weight, are you maintaining muscle or just becoming a smaller version of yourself? Can you adequately recover and keep this up for an extended period of time / avoid injury?

edit: more important than any of that, in terms of getting shredded, is your calorie and protein intake. Eating whole/nutrient dense foods will make it easier too.

Also you are equivocating time not total work

When work marched, HIIT is no more effective than LISS
In fact, in the long run, practicality wise, HIIT will cause a lot more muscle damage and limit the total volume you can perform which is the largest factor in calorie burn

Only reason to do HIIT in place of LISS for fat loss is time constraint
