I got a new tool for the workshop (wood lathe)

Anyone have experience on these things?



It's not working atm. The motor spins but it needs a belt. I have a strip of rubber that came with it, I think it needs to be glued together? - thats not something I've done before.

I will update this thread if I manage to turn anything lol

I found the old belt inside, I'll find a product that will glue it back together. Have you ever done something like that m8?



In the meantime, I'll replace the old screws with machine screws as some of them are missing

I reckon your best bet is to track down a new belt with the correct circumference to replace the snapped one

Might be a hazard if you glue the old one together as the belt integrity won't be the same.

You're so smart. I should've been more clear; I wasn't planning on glueing the old belt back together (pic below) I have a strip of belt material that came with the machine which needs to be glued.

Yeah, I'm stoked with this! Regarding the belt - I think it's a "cut it to the size you want, to match the speed you want" kind of deal. I'm going to cut the new strip down to the same size as the old one, then glue it together.

Here's where the old one came apart (at the join by the look of it).

The ole cut to size and glue together is a solid plan. I have nfi what the best rubber adhesive is.

I have a large glass dinning room table top that my mom gave us and has some great etch work done within it, unfortunately, I do not have a base..was thinking of something like this...



or..






but everything I have found is too small for the glass piece I have

This is just a bench top model thankfully, I couldn't fit a free standing unit.

Whenever I get a new piece of equipment I think to myself "willthisbe the one I lose my fingers too?" Lol, I still have all 10 but stay tuned to find out.

I don’t think the belt is cut to size. Usually the stepped pulleys have a few sizes and they are inverted. I can see the top one, i am guessing the bottom one goes smaller from out to in, but can’t see from pic. That lets the same belt fit on each step for different speeds. Usually there is a chart on the door of speeds. You usually rough on slower speed and then finish on higher speeds.

The expensive part is the tools, chisels and gouges etc, then you need a way to sharpen them and then additional chucks if you want. If I were you I would check CL, offerup, FB market etc for old lathe turning tools. You can usually grab an old set of steel tools for $50-60, whereas newer HSS tools can be way more than that each. There are also some with carbide cutters.

I mainly make bottle stoppers as gifts on mine.

Yeah that lever is normal
For the older stuff. Mine is so old just has gravity tension. The new higher end lathes are all electronic speed control. I just realized I don’t have pics of any of the wine stoppers i made, but they are nothing special. I just google “burl wood bottle stoppers” and basically steal ideas i like from pics and just kind of eyeball them to look similar to the pics lol. I’ll try to take a pic of the lathe and tools tomorrow. Its up on a shelf in the garage amd its cold out.

We're in the midst of cyclone Gabriel so the schools are closed. I took the boys to machinery house to try and teach them something + pick up some chisels.

They didn't have a replacement belt so I glued the old one back together for lols




It's working for now but I plan to try and find an O ring in a similar size from a hydraulics shop

Look out for moisture in whatever wood you procure. It can wreck your end result. Getting a good supplier and running a few tests can save you weeks of labor.

Mirin, I never did wood shop in high school. I rememeber I got top of the school (like 94%) in graphic design in 4th form without trying and then I moved onto agriculture. Maybe I missed my calling.

Good thought. I use 100% recycled wood so most of it is 100 yo rimu tree, cut down 100 years ago and its been in a house this whole time lol. It's really hard wood, and usually clears with no knots

Here's the test piece locked in




It was pretty fun. The work piece kept stopping, at first I thought the belt was slipping but the motor was stopping too. I don't think I was using too much force, maybe my chisels could use a sharpen.

This is going to be a butt plug for Getter_done for valentines day. Nobody tell him I don't want to ruin the suprise

Pro tip: to tell if its round yet while its spinning, gently and carefully rest one of your gouges on top of the piece. If it bounces its still square, if it stays smooth then its round

Great tip, thanks man. I'm playing around with the different tools to see what each of them do. Will probably watch some more youtube videos too.
