What band/artist have let you down in terms of live performance?

Misc always ask who the greatest singer is and it’s always Layne Staley (rightly so) but nobody ever asks who the chittest artist/band are. Hit me!

Honestly? Bon Jovi about a year ago. Only because every show before then that I saw Jon KILLED. He’s just old. He “performed fine” but his voice is shot. He needs to just go solo stripped down to small clubs/theaters.

Smashing Pumpkins. Was so stoked to see them, this was right after Mellon Collie came out and they were SO bad thanks to Billy Corgan trying to take over the show, read poetry and play his solo stuff. Literally half the crowd started walking out and he yelled at them that they sucked.

Nothing wrong with the 'performance' but I saw Rammstein play once and the live performance sounded 100% identical to a bonus live recording on their album for that song...

Made me wonder if they lip sync.

Does that count?

I saw Jethro Tull in the 90's. I went to the show as an afterthought, something to do on a Sat night. They were fuking awesome.

Saw they again maybe 5 years ago, absolutely awful.

I saw 50 cent mail it in a few years again too, the entire performance was like 60 minutes, and he did like 90 seconds of each song. It was still 100 times better than Jethro Tull.

Most of them sound like crap live unless it's at a smaller venue

Most people don't care after they've invested that much effort getting to the show

Rush the last half dozen or so times. Geddie's voice has been gone for decades. It actually sounds like he's in pain when he's singing, like someone wounded a duck or something. Don't understand why they just didn't hire a singer 20 years ago but it is what it is.

Metallica, machine head, death Angel, slipknot, the illegals (Phil’s voice) are some I’ve seen live that are great

Judging by recent recordings I can tell that pantera are also incredible live

I went to see ZZ prob 15 years ago (They were awesome) but Ted Nugent opened for them.

Despite being a small venue, he had a wall of dimed Marshalls like he was playing Wembley goddman stadium. My ears and my head hurt so bad by the time ZZ came on that I could barely enjoy them. Fuk ted nugent

The Pretty Reckless. The lead singer (Taylor Momsen) merely struts on stage, shaking her ass and twerking like a stripper. I'll stick to listening to their music in my headphones going forward.

Love the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but saw them at an outdoor festival in New Orleans in 2006 and they sucked. In their defense it was about 99° and 100% humidity but you could tell they were just going through the motions

Not true I’m my experience. I’ve been to see more bands live than I can remember and a lot of them are even better live. Some of it has to do with atmosphere but some of them sound identical or even better when they’ve added/changed things up.

Some notable bands I’ve seen live that sounded as good or better were

Incubus (I’ve heard people say the later years it wasn’t so good but in the early days they sounded fantastic live)

Tool (once again, the early days when Maynard still had his fire they were ridiculously good, saw them later and the band still kicked ass but Maynard just wasn’t the same)

Alice in Chains

Even the foo fighters, which I can’t stand now. They were pretty amazing on the color and the shape tour.

Avenged sevenfold was good too

In my experience I’d say the majority of them have exceeded expectations live.

One terrible concert I went to once was Cake and No Doubt. My gf at the time loved no doubt so I took her. Both bands were terrible but Gwen was hnnng back then.

I even saw New Kids on the Block live as a kid lol.

I got dragged to a Cake show one time by my ex. I guess they sounded more or less like they do on the radio (pretty easy when you just talk instead of sing), but I couldn't get into it. I just don't understand how people like it, but that's their business.

Other than that, I can't really think of a show I went to where I really felt completely let down by the band.

Saw Van Halen twice. Both shows were good, but DLR's voice obviously isn't like it used to be, and it was never truly great.

Aerosmith was good. The Stadium Tour this past summer was good - I thought Joan Jett, Poison, Def Leppard, and Motley Crue all sounded great. Vince's performance really surprised me after all the drama about him being a bloatlord who couldn't sing anymore. Billy Joel was good. The Struts are fantastic. Foreigner and Whitesnake were great. And so on.

I guess if I had to pick one that was kind of lame it would have to be The Who. They would have been awesome to see back in the day, but I saw them like 10-15 years ago after they had already lost John Entwistle. So, it was just overweight Daltrey with not much of his voice left and Townshend. Seemed like they spent an inordinate amount of time talking and playing newer, sort of experimental chit, showing videos, etc. Everyone wants to hear your classic hits, guys.

How long ago did you see them? The rumors now that I think have been pretty much confirmed is they don't play their solos or anything like that.

Ironically, Live is terrible live.

In their defense, this was right before they broke up, and you could tell they just weren't into it.

Matisyahu was also terrible. It was mainly the crowd. It was filled with absolute jacktard 16 year olds at the time(~2010).

Best show? Chicago. Hands down. No show has ever come close.

I saw Finger 11 in concert and they were absolute trash. Not that I had any expectations, but they were really bad. They opened for Chevelle, who was pretty awesome live.

Bands like The Who, ZZ Top, Bon Jovi, and Van Halen peaked around the 1970s. If you're in your 30s or 40s, you were born well after their peak years, and your parents are the ones who were into those bands
