Recommend me Outdoor Guard Dog breeds [SRS]

Lookin to buy a pupper for home protection.
I have a fence/gate around the entire property and do not plan to have the dog inside the house at all.

1) What sort of set up can I have for the lil fker? Can repurpose the shed for the dog.
2) What dog breeds are aesthetic and useful for home defence?

there's only two choices i see here

1) get a german shepherd and there's a good chance it'll attack what it's supposed to but not yo

2) get a Landshark and there's an even better it'll attack whatever it's supposed to, but also you

American Akita

but wtf man you gotta let your dog in the house from time to time. The Akita is a natural protector you dont even have to train them, only problem is they do not like strangers so you gotta socialize them so they know the difference.

If you want an autonomous guard dog that barely needs training and wants to be outdoors, I'd look at Tibetan Mastiffs.

Dunno how much land you have but outdoor dogs are fine and happy if you have a large enough plot, couple acres minimum.

It’s nice to have a smaller fence around a kennel setup or shed works, but we had a heated garage we would let the Rottweilers stay in during the coldest spells. If water bowls are freezing you need to find a better space.

The biggest of our rotties maybe came in the house a handful of times. He was happy to roam free tho and property was big enough he could do what he wanted. Plenty of large dog breeds were bred outdoors.

I’m personally opting for a Bull mastiff this time around for next guard dog. But I have some fencing to finish first.

Nah, you don't train it like a doberman or rottweiler or other common protection dog. They are instinctive guard dogs.

At least that's my understanding from everything I've seen.

That’s a wolf hybrid. They are not good guard dogs.


Leaving your dog outside 24/7 without anything to truly protect us a bad idea. Our CO is inside half the time.


Thing is a true territorial guardian will get bored with nothing really going on (Central Asians, CO, Gamprs, Tibetans)
And a lot of the other mastiff breeds are handler soft and don’t do well alone.

They are territorial guardians and do not need training to guard their territory or be stranger averse. However Dobermans and Rottweilers will also guard their territory just not as effectively.

All dogs need training for personal protection (guarding a moving object with ability to be sent and recalled from a target). Doberman was the only breed truly bred for this purpose.

Grew up with a female German Shepherd. She was incredibly territorial and protective but you need to be careful because they're also extremely intelligent. She wouldn't give off any threatening cues, so people would just assume it was OK to come onto our property. Let's just say she was NOT cool with that and more than a few people probably had to go home and change their underwear when they thought they could cross over our property line.

Growing up with one, I just assumed other breeds were at least close in intelligence but they're not. She was really more like a person. You can tell they actually think and analyze situations much like a person would. For example, German Shepherds are extremely aware of their surroundings and will be watching your every move and gauging the threat long before they ever make their presence known to you. Compare that with dumber breeds that either won't even know you're close to their property or they just start barking and aware you of their presence right away.

Just be aware they can be bred for different purposes eg. working or show lines.

So know what you want in a Shepherd before buying.

Also, dont get a puppy. The puppy stage sucks.

I think you went a little too far in 1 or 2 places.
But I definitely recognised things you stated here in my Shepherd.

German Shepherd. I had 2 when I was in grade school through high school. Lived out in the country with a 5 acre front yard. I remember seeing some guy walking across our yard about the same time the dogs did. They ran down there and one dog started barking at him while the other bit him in the butt. He spun around then the other dog started biting him in the butt. He spun around again, bitten. Then he high tailed his azz out of there while both dogs were nipping him in the butt.

One winter there was about 6" of snow on the ground. Our 2 German Shepherds dragged home a roadkill deer. I could see 8 sets of paw prints around the indentation in the snow from the deers body from where they dragged it back. The didn't eat my mom's food. They ate that whole deer in about 5 days. Temp stayed below 32 the whole time.
