I kinda can understand spending alot of money as a timepiece for a luxury purchase to show but outside of that I think the smart watch is the way to go.

I have a old Seiko diver and G-Shock DW-6600. I was given both back in the 90s to wear while doing stuff. Still wear both when I need a watch.

I interact with a bunch of very wealthy people (incomes over $10M per year). Both of those watches have received cool watch remarks from these guys. One guy wearing a Rolex Explorer called my G-Shock "god tier". I later found out he follows Nico Leonard.

If I was buying a new mechanical watch it probably would be a Sinn 556.

FYI, a lot of very wealthy people wear Apple watches as daily go to.

They're functional and affordable but they really don't fit into a category that isn't dominated by something else.

The problem with a Seiko watch is that it will never be as accurate as a phone (true for all watches) and everyone always carries a phone, so it is not an ideal keeper of time.

It's not collectable enough to appreciate in value or be remarked upon by other enthusiasts (with some exceptions within the lineup). Usually you're looking at spending $2500 just to enter this space but there are exceptions.

It is not more functional than a smart watch or as disposable so it is not really a good economical choice.

With all that being said, if you like the watch you should wear it- it's meant to be enjoyed.

They're perfect for someone that wants a nice professional looking watch without breaking the bank. Its like buying a base model Mercedes or BMW, lol. I have a couple that I haven't worn in over a decade mainly due to the advent of smart phones.

seikos are great

solid watches, tons of designs, affordable prices, in-house movements, and they're a brand with a lot of heritage

haters ITT need to put some respeck on seiko's name, they almost single-handedly annihilated the swiss watch industry and the big names (rolex, patek, AP, etc.) in the 1970s.

I have a bunch of Seikos. I like watches just because I like them, not as a speculative investment or trying to MOGG poorcels. Perfect brand for me.

You can even customize or have someone make you a one off.

If it's an automatic, it's a perfectly serviceable entry watch.

They do make some nicer stuff. Any of their "prospex" line divers are sold choices.

I respect an entry level Seiko way more than some crappy fashion brand

lol dude, like 99% of luxury collectors had a Seiko for their first watch. Definition of entry. Nothing wrong with that.

Before I bought my Seamaster, I used to wear an automatic seiko 5 Seamaster homage. The 7s26 movement is a workhorse.

Only thing I didn’t like: non-hackable, loud rotor, and seconds hand had a more stuttery sweep. But for I think 75-100$ I paid at the time, well worth the money

Which model Seamaster do you own brah?

And yeah, the lack of hacking is a bummer. But in all honesty, it's a +/- 20 second movement. Reduces the value of setting the time down to the second.
