According to the lawsuit, nooses first began appearing on the property in April 2016, when an unidentified employee reported finding a rope "tied into a hangman's noose hanging from a scaffold."

They aren't talking about slings, it's specifically rope tied into hangman's nooses (neese?). Exxon found it had happened and banned two contractors for being involved. Lawsuit claims additional nooses were found but ignored.

However, given the fact that other such "cases" resulted in a misunderstanding of what a "noose" was its hard to take this story at face value

I'd usually agree. Exxon"s own investigation found it happened in the past though. Granted, they could have been looking for a reason to fire the contractors, but it's unusual and lends credence to the other claims.

That it happened in the past doesn't mean the future claims aren't bullchit either. Which is why people just have to let these things play out before popping off about racism or liberals or whatever.

It was a unit expansion, which typically has one large EPC (zachry, S&B, Foster Wheeler, etc.) over construction. The welders, operators, and fitters are all working for these EPC's and not Exxon employees. They will also have several 3rd party subs. Depending on the scope of the job, it could be dozens or more. Exxon is merely the plant owner and had every interest in throwing someone else's employees under the bus to quickly end a racially sensitive situation.

Mind you, there are numerous similar plants in Louisiana, and the entire Gulf Coast. Based on the article, this plant is apparently a hotbed of noose activity. No mention of any other plant. What are the odds?

It cited 5 separate "noose" incidents since 2016. There are dozens of these plants in that region. Yet only this one is having these incidents? Choker slings, either made from cable or nylon composites are common, especially on an active jobsites like this one. You've got cranes everywhere flying heavy material into the structure and whatnot. Electrical extension chords are also hanging everywhere since they need power tools up in the structure to operate. Not a single mention of the EPC who's employees were canned. Only statements from Exxon, who has every interest in not receiving bad PR.

I'm a former tradie, I get it.

The article went out of their way to describe what was allegedly found though. It could be bad info but didn't leave much room for interpretation.

I agree it could all be BS.
