Injectable weight loss drug Wegovy approved for use in UK NHS

Pretty powerful appetite suppressant (same medication that's given to diabetics as Semaglutide) that induces double figure %s of weight loss (no drug previously has come anywhere near that) without other lifestyle changes

In an ideal world people would have the willpower to do this themselves, but a cheap and highly effective weight loss drug seems like it'd save any healthcare system a lot of money and resources overall

Is that the one thats being shilled for <12 year olds, that they need to take forever once they're on it? I wouldn't trust a god damn thing coming out of NHS, etc

Im an ideal world everyone would be in a wholesome family with a stay at home mother cooking nutritious meals

Instead we are over worked and eating soy, plastic and seed oil filled garbage

Yep, I live in a small area & just in the 'big' part of the area where there is a shopping centre a Tim Hortons is opening, a couple of minutes down the road there is a Subway, within 10 minutes or so walk there is a McDonald's, 2 minutes walk from Subway there is a Burger King, going the other direction there is a KFC 15 odd walk minutes away, on top of that loads of Coffee shops with food being served.

Also within a 10-15 minute walk radius there is Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland, a farm shop & most of the ordinary shops like WHSmith & Waterstones there are cafes selling food.

The engineer in me says that, rather than bloatmaxx people on seed oils and HFCS then kill their appetite for more with a pill, it would be easier just to cut down the food to start with.

In an ideal world sure. But if this drug can induce reliable weight loss and meaningfully reduce rates of obesity complications (CVD, beetus, stroke etc) then given how cheap it is it seems like a solid net positive from a healthcare and health econ standpoint.

muscle and bone density loss is often associated with lower mortality rates. you don't want to be an old person needing a walker and breaking your bones and needing to go to the hospital every time you take a spill.

while i think in the short-term it's a good thing. ultimately it's another pill/medicine to be hooked on and reliant upon. there's always a flip side to the positives. it should be for people due to circumstances out of their control (i.e: wheel-chair bound so can barely exercise, or some sort of disease). but we all know it's going to be for every jane and joe due to lifestyle decisions, being fat af. you create dependency on drugs that may or may not be available, could become expensive, etc.

modern medicine is great but has created a dependency which ultimately isn't good for society. and even so, most of these medications have physical downsides. before there were real consequences and downsides to being obese which manifested itself quicker. now these people's lives are being prolonged thus draining the pockets of society. not sure this model is sustainable. nor is this whole "just take this pill and you'll be fine" approach.
