Are you happy in your line of work?

Have any of you hit the trifecta:

1. Enjoy your work
2. Remuneration
3. Non-toxic work environment

I have two of the three (the first two). Still thinking about progressing to the third.

Thoughts?

I suppose 2 and 3 apply to me.

Number 1 though...no. It's not terrible, but it can be pretty tedious and aggravating at times (navigating red tape, having to obtain shyt from other people - including nonresponsive people, idiots who don't do the job themselves implementing stupid policies to make things more difficult, etc.)

0/3.

That old misc meme where the guy is driving to work while daydreaming in traffic of driving himself off the bridge is exactly how I feel every morning. I make just enough to get by (used to be poverty so it’s a step up) but I have what I do and I’m surrounded by officels who just fkin gossip and act like fake beta cocksuckers all day long. No thanks Jeff.

One day I’ll make it out I swear to god.

Are you in management? There is something about Gen Z applicants that join us and think to re-write or re-imagine tasks, even those that are explicitly conveyed. It is a bit strange - especially when some seem addicted to avoiding policy implementation as you mention.

Not currently, and it's not Gen Zers responsible for the BS I'm talking about here. I deal with purchasing shyt for the military and making the contracts to do so.

You get a variety of idiots, who don't have the responsibility/accountability/burden of actually making and signing the contracts trying to throw all sorts of additional obstacles in your way. Whether it's the Small Business people pushing set asides that make no sense, Pricing People (along with other higer ups) making it practically impossible to adequately justify the price you signed off on, Policy people coming up with other nonsense, etc.

It's basically a case of - this shyt needs to get done...but various people are eager to throw additional obstacles in your way, and it's fine for them because they aren't the ones who actually have to get the shyt done (buying difficult to procure items for the military) and take the accountability of signing their name/obligating funds on the contract. Thats the shyt that does get me a bit heated.

1. Not really but its tolerable
2. I get paid decent for what I do, and considering having no education or degree
3. No, I have alot of perks and benefits in my position but I wouldn't call it a healthy environment, coworkers are mostly victim twats and boss is a simple guy

Overall I can't and don't complain much. I am grateful for my job and position. However I am feeling like I'm hitting the ceiling in terms of growth, its a small, relatively simple business. I want to make more money, not necessarily do more work but in order to make more I know I need to work harder, and I am just not sure that opportunity exists where I am at. Feeling a bit stuck. Im a sales and customer rep, im great at dealing with customers but Id like to be doing something bigger.

Like my job

Pay is fine

Environment is toxic, ceo goes off the rails from time to time, I've worked in more toxic environments, but most people here are unable to deal with it. My controller quit after 3 months because of her and the toxic environment. Several others looking to leave. It's a PE turnaround so likely a 2-3 year gig. Then payout and I'll decide if I want to stay for the next set of owners or move on. I'm likely to move on and try to find a better environment, but we'll see what she accomplishes on the ops and sales side.

I feel appreciated and heard, I am as empowered with decision making authority as someone in this position can be. With the mutual understanding if I **** it up, I am gone. My leaders trust me, I trust my employees, and my leadership. We are all extremely open and transparent with each other. in the right setting, with right audience of course. I feel very well compensated for my efforts, I feel extremely fortunate for my job and view it as a gift. It is a gift.

There are worse jobs but at the same time it's still a complete bullsh*t job where I'm a hamster on a wheel. I hate the new year because every year it's the same tired bullsh*t about company goals and professional development you have to submit. First off, I don't give a f*ck about the company. Why don't you just tell me what's important for it and stop making me pretend I'm super excited about driving results for the business. I'm going to do what needs to be done because I want to be paid, not because I actually give a sh*t. Second, under no circumstances am I interested in personal development. I do not want to take training courses. I do not want to increase my skillset so you, the company, can take advantage of those newly added skills making me do more while paying me exactly the same. That's a scam plain and simple.

F*ck off already with this sh*t. I literally just want to meet the basic requirements of the job you hired me to do, get paid the amount you promised, and log off while preferably never thinking about work in the slightest at the end of each day.

But of course everyone frowns on this attitude so you have to continue playing games and jumping through hoops even when you really don't want to do any of this sh*t. My only motivator is that you pay me. It really is that simple. My yearly goals are to get paid and not be homeless, end of story.

Yeah my job is GOAT.

No PC or woke culture at all.

I'm a "tradie herder", I can either tell the tradies what to do, and just chill in my office. Or if I feel like it I can go outside and be a tradie myself doing whichever task I feel like.

The pay isn't CEO 10k/day but I never have to worry about money, and every time I've asked for a raise I've received it.

Sorry to hear breh, srs. Office gossip happens at my place as well, from "make-work" types that act like they are busy [and many of whom wonder why they are let go, srs.]

I'm lucky to be in a position where, when I fire someone, it feels good putting them in their place.

Happy engineers exist, of course - what would make you think they don't? I have a lot of respect for those who studied EE (as an example), and try to make the chip design grind happen. Especially without connections.

Why would they "throw all sorts of additional obstacles in your way" - simply because they are not the ones responsible? So for example, you have someone in a policy position playing 20 questions whenever you need to do a procurement bid?

I love my job.

It’s higher than industry average, plenty of room for growth.

I deal with highly educated people on a daily basis which can take my advice as telling them what to do, but there are ways to navigate those egos. It’s all about finding your voice and being emotionally intelligent, aka read the room.

It’s pretty satisfying when the boss in the room says, I don’t care what you think, do whatever he tells you.

Never thought I'd be able to say this, but I hit the trifecta in my current position.

Love my job and the pay is good with plenty of upside. No toxicity whatsoever. I've worked hard to be able to say that, though.

I don't know much about that industry, but wouldn't the natural progression with experience be to become the manager of sales and customer rep teams, at someplace bigger?

I have two jobs.

One I couldn’t possibly be more happy with.

1.) I love what I do, it doesn’t even feel like work anymore.

2.) The more I work the more I earn-there is no end to what I can earn.

3.) I’m alone 90% so no toxicity

The second one I ****ing hate. I’m essentially trapped in that hellhole for the foreseeable future— okay not really it’s actually only a few more months, but still.

1.) I hate what I do. When I started in 2016, I took over quoting jobs because she, my friend, was so far behind and I genuinely enjoy calculating quotes, in a job like that there is a lot of leg work when calculating the quotes but i developed a system so it was smooth sailing. Once I got her and her business caught back up to speed my position slowly shifted. Now she relies on me in this capacity, which is basically sales.

2.) She pays me well. But I buy general office supplies, cleaning products and other miscellaneous items when needed, which is all the damn time. Not only that her checks have bounced several times, at one point she owed me $1200 on top of all that she got the worst attitude with me because I started cashing her checks at her bank. Smh -_-

3.) Toxicity of that place is going to melt the flesh right off my bones one day. Every single day it’s something-lies, passive aggressive comments, moodiness, etc…

We work in a similar role, in a reasonably similar field. My direct "boss" (she's senior to me, but it is her boss that is my real boss) will be fired in the not too distant future. She's a super toxic individual, effectively a misogynist. I'm immune to her, and know how to put her in her place, but she takes out the tragedies of her personal life (multiple miscarriages, a husband who doesn't love her and that she doesn't love) on the staff, flying off the handle too.

It'll be the pinnacle of my career to see her fired, seriously. She was promoted into that job by my real boss (a man) who felt sorry for her, and got caught up in the 'let's help a woman out' thing. He really regrets it, and the termination clauses she negotiated into her contract, dead fkn srs, but I can't go into detail there. Let's just say, firing her will be very expensive.

That sounds very pragmatic, but on the point that "skillset increases are a scam" - I disagree. In fact some ambitious folks take all the possible training classes / certifications they can, in part - because you might actually learn something and get better, and another - because the courses can cost many thousands of dollars out of your pocket, so if your company is paying - why not?
