How TF do I stop drinking? Srs

The job I have now is an advanced position within my career path. There is so much freedom that one is allowed to work from home or get to the office at 10 or 11 am and is acceptable as long as productivity is being shown. At first it seemed great. But as a recovering alcoholic it has caused me to relapse to the point where I’m drinking almost every day again. I stopped for about 10 years but now with this position I’m almost as bad as I used to be. The gym helps but I can’t combat that urge in the afternoons when I get home and I’m just flat out bored and want to unwind and watch a movie. Somebody help me

My girlfriend keeps drinks on hand. I used to buy only as much as I wanted to drink. But once I get buzzing I’ll grab some of her stuff. It’s pretty much uncontrollable

Gotta make the rule weekends only brah. Try a tea or make some other kinds refreshing bevy that has no alcohol in it. Even Diet Coke would be better.

args, fkk, how everybody is so fkn wrong. BigBen, listen, there is only one way. You need to get involved in a project, whatever is the fk you are doing at work. Like, put your ego and good name on line, accept the responsibility, show them how its done.

This is when you acutely feel how drunkenness takes away from your decision-making and productivity. You must feel it.

For starters, take sauna and drench in your own sweat. You have big day tomorrow.

Yup, every sip is a dopamine hit.

Getting smaller servings just lead to you hankerin' for more because you're chasing that dopamine hit.

It's a battle for willpower at that point.

You need to figure out what's the reason you're drinking in the first place

You're most likely attempting to fill some sort of void (drinking often could be the cause of this void via dependency)

Figure that out, address it, then you'll make some lifestyle / routine change(s) that should help with the cravings and enable you to stop easier

Understanding neurotransmitters helps too, knowing what you're doing to your brain puts things in perspective and may be good ammunition to mitigate cravings

People drink because they feel bad, but they feel bad because they're drinking (neurotransmitter down-regulation)

Get a Prescription for Naltrexone.

I don’t know why this isn’t talked about more, But it should be.

Naltrexone, Isn’t addictive and doesn’t go through your liver. You simply take it an hour before you believe you may have a drink. Even during of you have forgotten is completely fine.

It takes the high away And the craving for more away from drinking, you still get drunk, But it’s blocks the part of your brain that gets enjoyment from it.

Learn to control your urges and cope with them in healthy ways. It's really hard the first few times saying no but after that it gets easier every time. From there you have to work on the aspects of your life that are holding you back from being happy. If you are an alcoholic then you are running/hiding from something emotionally. Maybe you need therapy to process past traumas, or maybe you need better friends or a wife and kids. From there it's just about staying vigilant because even when you fix your life and you're on a great path the urges will hit hard occasionally and you have to be aware that they are just urges and not needs. Nothing changes no matter how good your life gets, you will always be a bad drinker there is no coming back from it once you get to that point. Only option is to not drink anymore. Good luck.

2nd thread I saw today about quitting drinking. COVID and the shift to WFH is bringing alcohol in many workers' homes tbh. You just gotta separate drinking from your work days, that's all. Even if you're staying at home all day for work. Weekends = alcohol. Make that shift and then you'll see a substantial reduction in weekly intake, less daily spending, less empty Calories, less bloat. If you're wanting to quit for good, this is a significant step towards doing that.

Stop going to liquor stores.

That's how I quit. Been sober 11 months now. Had a hell of a drinking problem for some time before that. I literally just told myself "I'm not going to the liquor store today" for about 2 weeks. It got a lot easier after that. I don't miss any of the endless bullchit of it all, the negative health effects, or the wasting $300 - $400 /mo on booze.

Or..... just skip all that bullchit, admit to yourself you got issues you need to get under control, and stop frequenting liquor stores and bars. I never understood why people overcomplicate it so much.

The real key is, you need to *want* to quit. Same as with quitting smoking/chew/etc. You can shove whatever sunshine and rainbows up people asssses about it you want; none of it changes the fact that what matters by far the most is whether or not you actually want to quit.
