Why are liquor stores taxing the poor?

What’s the deal with the 50 cent tax if I don’t spend more than ten dollars at your store?

Thinking about calling out these businesses there’s 3 of them in my neighborhood I know of. I am sure there’s more.

I don't know if it's still the case, but some stores used to get charged x amount for the bank processing an electronic transaction.

The margin on goods didn't cover the additional cost of the processing charge below a certain threshold, so they passed it on to the customer.

I wouldn't have expected it to still be the case, with the majority of transactions now being electronic, but maybe they bank with a chitty bank.

thought with all these cryptos / nodes / DeFi chains / etc claiming movement of currency faster and cheaper yet we still have minimum transactions fees

unless crypto is a scam

Was at a very good restaurant recently and right on the menu, if you pay with a CC its a 2.5% surcharge.

I've only ever personally seen it in gas stations and convenience stores.

When I was in college, there was a gas station just down the street from the dorms and people would go to buy condoms with debit cards at 2am and then buy other stuff whilst there just to meet the minimum amount.

Yeah not sure how it is now but there used to be/may still be a minimum CC processing charge for the merchant. That is why you would see minimum credit card purchase signs at a lot of gas stations etc.

Also if you're so poor you can't afford .50 you probably shouldn't be consuming luxury items like alcohol.

No it’s a 50 cent tax on a 99 cent can of Arizona tea.

You know liquor stores sell more than liquor right?

Businesses never charge tax on anything.

They collect tax for the government. They have no choice but to collect it.

Lol, son. You want the store to pay 3% of the amount charged and $0.15 per transaction on your $0.99 purchase? Suck a dink.
