Games From 20+ Years Ago Still Look Good (discussion)
I notice more and more 2k/4k upscale videos with PS2, Xbox and Gamecube games running on emulators. Seems that the biggest problem with older games was the low resolution textures and poor lighting/reflections. Otherwise, the games looked great, which is why they look so good on emulators.

Depends on the game imo. More stylized games age a lot better than games going for “realism”.
Okami and Zelda: Windwaker are timeless for example. Okami in hd:

Games also weren't afraid to look like games back then. Nowadays if characters mouths don't sync up with the text the game gets a negative review.

I'd have to vote in Final Fantasy X and X-2, with the former being released in 2001, I think it had fantastic graphics for a game that age, even without the HD releases etc.
A bit blurry if anything but the general graphics and art was good.

OP you posted stuff that is emulated on PC, as much as I loved playing all of the Gran Turismo games back in the day I'll bet you any money it doesn't look like that originally.

Yeah it's like all the growth leading up to the PS2 generation was incredible, then it's been relatively minor improvements since. We will never see anything like the excitement of the 90's gaming era when generational advancement seemed so massive. I remember how back then it seemed like every generation brought about a revolution in the way video games looked. Now a days I can easily go back to playing Xbox 360 games, and all they need is FPS enhancement for me to think they're just as good looking as X1/PS4 games, if not sometimes better looking. Heck I would argue the biggest advancement the SeX/PS5 generation has brought about is the improved performance.

Anything from the Sega era looks so good, the artstyle for those games are timeless imo.
PS1 / Nintendo 64 games on the other hand aged very badly, I mean sure there are some games that look great, but most of them just have those blocky pixels.

Loved Hotline Miami, binding of Isaac, and Nobody Saves The World. New games with classic graphics focused on challenging difficulty and gameplay.
I’m about to remove Live A Live with 3 more stories to go. Because I want to try Tactics Orge Reborn thanks to this thread, to see if it looks that much different than the OGs.

Game mechanics haven't had a big leap in 20 years. So yes, if you updated the graphics of most old games, they would be great.

The truth is since the vast majority of games are made for consoles post 2012 we get giga-cucked due to them sharing volatile memory while PC CPU's have their own dedicated in very large amounts
That results in a lot of games being released today with poverty environmental textures/shaders often 720p or less; luckily when they get converted for PC we get true 4K packs to apply
Old games have their own charm, art direction/shadowing/color grading are probably the most important features, evident by how the most popular games played today look like something from a Gameboy
Back then ugly visuals were hidden by your CRT TV's 480p resolution anyway

the games still look good, you just got to play them on their proper resolutions.. aka the TV tech at the time..
don't play a 360p game on your 4k tv then complain that it looks like chit.
play that on a CRT TV and you have a beautiful game just like when you were 7 years old.
if not, then use those emulators that can upscale textures and such.

Figured I’d ask it itt not make a new topic for this. But they were harder. I have become a whiz at Punch Out and have just recently mastered Mr. sandman and super macho man with relative ease I dodge it all just fine.
That game and ninja gaiden I have played the most in history. I still only beat them once every blue moon. I get to Mike Tyson and I die. Ninja gaiden > last 2 levels are from hell.
Oh yes my question: Are there any great games new or retro that are on par with the OG ninja gaiden?

That's because you're watching vids of games that have been artificially buffed way more than their original versions. Play them on the original hardware on a period correct TV and report back.

Old games were built with that technology in mind
One question. Is playing nes or classics on emulators fully legal? Does Nintendo have any objections I don’t know at all I never did emulation.
