I like the idea of looking for a "partner" (a teammate you can rely on) in a relationship, but calling your "partner" a "partner" does sound sterile af.

In French the word for woman and wife are the same thing. That's the way to do it. No partner, no significant other, just wife/woman as one term.

It was used for people in committed relationships who weren't married.

Before gays could get married, they used it and straight couples used BF/GF or fiance, but many more straight couples are in LTRs with no intention of getting married now and have been using the term.

It should only be used in that context. Calling your wife your partner just means you are a twat.

Co-workers was recently found out to have a kid (not a big deal), but when asked about her boyfriend/fiance/husband (didn't know what he was), she called him her "partner".
