Question for people old enough to remember the 1980s

If you were old enough in the 1980s to be kind of independent, and you could go back to that time and re-live your life differently with the knowledge you have today, would you prefer the 1980s and 1990s, or are there things you would miss about the modern Internet era?

What are the pros and cons of both the pre-Internet era and the Internet era?

Definitely better now, everything is easier and faster, what would I do differently? I guess obviously same thing everybody else would do, in 2008 or 2012 I would buy 100,000 bitcoins and sell them when they hit $64,000 each. Lol

I was 8 in 1980, I would’ve convinced my parents to invest in apple, and all the chit that exploded. The 80’s was the chit tho, especially Friday night walking into the arcade with a $10 LAWDY….

100% 80's although the 90s weren't bad.
The only thing I would do different is invest heavily in Apple and a few other stocks. (knowing what I know now of course)
I would also buy as many 60's-70's muscle cars as I could get my hands on and put them in storage. In the 80's they were used and cheap and a lot of kids owned them. You could find them everywhere.
Would have fuked every chick that was giving me obvious hints that they was down for sex, but I was too dumb to realize it at the time.
Would have went fishing and hunting with my dad way more.

There was a penny-arcade comic that mentioned this topic.

The kid was all nostalgic to his dad like "oh the 90s must've been so wholesome and fun etc."

And thr adult was like "no! It was boring as sh*t. A one hour car ride to grandma's and literally nothing to do. Sitting on the toilet 10 minutes a day with nothing to do. Waiting in line for things with nothing to do. These days you have no reason to ever be bored. Back then it was a nightmare of boredom."

And it's true. Not very often am I ever bored.

Cars sucked then. Was brutal getting driven around in a 90s Ford explorer with terrible handling, and a weak af engine.

Modern cars MOG that era(assuming you can get a real v8 and not some lame hybrid)

Girls were uglier then srs. Late 80s early 90s hair and makeup was bad. Lots of prime sloots now(though I think late 2000s early 2010s was their peak, when girls wore tight af clothes).

Only thing that really sucked were the horrible interest rates.

Car reliability sucked too back then. Everything was a guaranteed rust bucket.

Girls wore tight clothes in the 80s, short shorts were still a thing.

But yeah, I'd take it back anyday of the week, hairy pussy, granny panties, no internet porn and all.

I mean would still be fine but there’s been a lot of cool innovations with satellite internet and batteries etc that make rural living still have access to basics.

But if I could go back to less fukking people being alive in the world, then yes I pick that.

I have been working in IT for 22 years. I would gladly go back to the 80s and 90s without hesitation. Would just be a tradie. I wouldn’t miss a thing. Social Media destroyed peoples minds, there is no recovering from what we have done.

Nobody had phones so you would plan stuff out a lot more.

I remember my dad sneaking me into a bar in 91 for lingerie night when I was 14. It was like the scene in Goodfellas where they are having a great time in the tikki bar. The first one where they are telling jokes, not the later one where they kill the guy.

I was born in 88, and if I coould be reborn somehow with the same parents, I'd want to pop out right in 1980. The 90's and early 2000's were awesome, and I think it would be cool to experience the 80's as a kid.

Back in the day, if you made plans, you'd better damn well stick to them. You couldn't just send over a text and say "Hey, I'm not gonna make it".

Man, it just felt like so much more freedom and mystery before smartphones.

I can remember some of the 80s and of course I'd miss conveniences we have now, but if I could go back knowing what I know now I'd relish in the fact that the kids in my neighborhood all knew each other and went outside all the time. Playing football, sometimes basketball or hockey like 5 hours a week with each other, riding bikes places and our parents having no idea where we were until dinner time. I'd go back and not change a thing until high school (the 90s).

Kind of an odd question.

In my case I'm remembering it as a child.

It's not "real life", most people grow up at least being a little bit insulated from bad and "bad" things in the world, if not completely.

I feel like nothing about nowadays really sucks as bad as people make it out to be.

I don't know if you're familiar with the internet but people love to complain, many do it as a subconscious hobby.

To a very very great degree, we empower what we give attention to.

It was much more difficult to get laid in the 80s and 90s. People would meet on like newspaper advertisements and chit. Imagine scanning the newspaper trying to score a chick. Kinda like Craigslist but it only refreshed once or twice a week.

Now days you can have a different tinderella every day of the week.

I did score 3 chicks in the same week once in the 90s, a personal best back then. But now you could do that on a slow Tuesday if you set your mind to it.

LOL media in general BRB only hear what's on TV or radio if you liked a song either but the album or wait 12 hours until they play it again.

OP my main gripe about current times if I really had to, is an overabundance of stimulus.

Fast food is like optimized to taste great, YouTube tracks your preferences and recommend stuff based on it, etc.

If you allow yourself to be distracted for too long it's very easy to say know all the details of The Titanic sinking when you could have been better investing your time and energy into something that would beat fruit in your life

Nowadays the real "battle" is between corporations and us, with the prizes being our focus and attention.

So I guess the biggest difference I see between 80's and now is that now EVERYTHING is monetized.

And with computers and cell phones came opportunities for us to be bombarded by information.

Changes: obviously invest in sure winners (Back to the Future Biff).

80s to late 90s were GoaT. Peak civilization before the rise of Skynet (AI, internet, Social Media, etc.). People were more social, in better shape, and happier. While connectivity has made some things much more convenient, they have over complicated life much more.

No GPS? That's ok, people are cool if you get a little lost.
No online dating? That's ok, just go to the mall with a buddy and meet some girls and hang out.
No smartphone? That's ok. You are having fun with friends, actually talking with them and doing activities.

LOL we used to have a card shop right by my elementary school.

Word was the owner was a scammer like opening packs and resealing them etc.

A friend and I forged a signature of David Robinson on a card and sold it to some kid for $10.

He went to "Parker's" (I don't remember if that was the name of the place but was owner's name) and the guy told him it wasn't a real David Robinson autograph and showed him a real one 😂😂

I was born in 84, so kind of hard to have much beyond vague memories of most of it, but...90's and early 2000's were pretty good overall imo.

Personally, I'm pretty sure I liked the early 2000s the most though overall.

IMO all of the access to information, ordering things, music, books, etc. that we have available now...I wouldn't trade it to go back then though. With that said, there certainly was an innocence and charm to those simpler times (and our brains not being so overloaded, we were able to find enjoyment/pleasure in much simpler things).
