I usually put an object that looks valuable but isn't in the safe as a decoy. Then I hide the real chit between the mattresses.

Perfectly safe unless anyone that has ever been to the hotel remembers the code, or calls the front desk and tells them they forgot the code.

You are paying them for a service and they are providing you with extra security.

They would be legally responsible for anything that happens to items in the safe.

Their lawyers knew this and accepted it as a risk before making the decision to have them.

their insurance companies are aware of them.

Nothing is 100% safe, but if there were any type of damages as a result of the safe being broken into, you could seek compensation and you would have a pretty good shot as they have already accepted that risk legally.

which is what they are doing by providing the safe

Depends on the safe. The one I had you set the code every time you locked it. Pretty good design really. There maybe a master code.

Found out when my toddler locked a bunch of clothes in the hotel safe that they have factory defaults that will open in the event my situation arizes. The default is changeable, a responsible hotelier will change it from the factory default. I guess you can call ahead to see if they've taken the extra precaution.

Hiding between matressesis the worst idea. Housekeeping has their hands in there everytime they change sheets and do your bed.

There are usually atleast 2 or3spotsyou can hide stuff. Velcro with double sided tape works wonders. You can hide cash and small electronics virtually anywhere you can fit your hands.

The most common model i've seen you can just give them a good thump on top and they open by themselves

How does the hotel open the safe if someone locks it?

2+2

Don't use the hotel safe for anything valuable

Most rooms have removable panels, I.e. built in TV surround panel, fabric headboard, side table with inset counteracts, floating shelves. Most of these can be easily removed in seconds but no one thinks to look there because they're not intended to be disassembled. Even drawers with metal runners can be removed and you can tuck in some velcro tape holding your valuables.

You are better off putting it in the hotel safe than the room safe.

Any halfway decent hotel has arealsafe that they will place guest's valuables in upon request (some hotels charge for it and some don't). Only the duty manager can access it and things are signed in and out.

It's much more secure than the room safes.
