They don’t need that to start a war, they already do what they want in that regard. It’ll just be used to further polarize the population at some point and people will be arguing over whether or not a pic or video is real along with all the other stuff people argue about.

No need to use AI footage to start a war/conflict, see Bush and Powell.

I think a better question is How long until Tucker and Fox News start creating AI fake video clips to dupe their audience into believing it. That's much more likely. That and someone like Trump calling real video footage fake.

CNN and MSNPC certainly didn't need AI or fake videos to dupe people into thinking the covid Vax was safe or that it would stop the spread.

I concur, it's not a matter of need, but rather how much easier it will be to sell a war or "cause" to the public, sow doubt, and all other forms of manipulation.

We already got a tiny, Costco sized sample with the fake Trump arrest deepfakes. You just know a few of the residents chaffed their nipples for nothing.

It’s possible that they would continue to release stuff like that to sow confusion, but at the moment I don’t think they would push any official narratives on something with a digital footprint that could possibly be proven to be fake. No need to risk that backlash when they can already do whatever they want. The risk/reward just doesn’t seem to be there in that regard. I’d say it’s much more likely that they would say a legit recording is fake than vice versa. For example if an audio clip leaks of something that looks bad they may just say it’s a deep fake.

Exactly, and I think that's where the real threat lies because we have already seen how willing media but specifically tech media companies are to do it for the government. It's not liketheyhave to worry about their own reputations or credibility when that's already down the drain but enough vacuous morons continue to buy everything they tell them because it happens to align with their own beliefs. Tech companies in particular merely have to be just slow enough to stop the spread to let the seeds take root and divide people further over the veracity of content.

That said, you're right about how easy this will make it for any genuine evidence to be discarded as a fake. They can keep putting offfinalconclusions as to the validity of some recording or photo with ongoing investigations, or blow it off entirely. Again, we already got a taste of narrative gaslighting throughout COVID to know how easily they can dismiss stories, only to pursue them at their discretion (e.g lab leak is a conspiracy theory, only for the possibility to land in an official government bill in regards to investigating just that). And the people who believe them the first time will somehow memory hole that early dismissal and continue to blindly follow through.
