Landscaping Company Thinking They Can Take Advantage

Got a little spread in the burbs of Charm City, like 2 miles outside the city limits so occasionally bullets land in our yard...jk or maybe not jk...

Anyways I have a nice pool in the back with tons of landscaping and lots of gardens and landscaping throughout the rest of the property. We always gets these dudes from "south of the border" to pull the weeds from all the gardens, put down mulch, and trim our bushes. I know I know but I'm getting old and it's a lot for this dude and his bish to handle. Anyway, with the cost of mulch I pay around $1,400 cash. Well we decide to get an estimate from a local company this year. They say they'll pull the weeds, round up, throw down a weed barrier, mulch, put some rocks around the pool equipment, and trim the bushes. Says it will be 6 guys for a day and half.

Estimate = $5,500.

Like I know they're doing more than my Modello loving bros, but they're charging me 4x as much? If they would have said $3k, I'd have given them the job but I ain’t about getting phuked so some landscape company owner can buy another $100k sports car toy. Luckily my normal crew is available.

I'd tell them to kick those rocks and also fist themselves with their trimming equipment.

For real. Say it is 6 dudes for call it 15 hours. At what, $35/hr all in that's $3,200. Mulch and rocks maybe another $600. So the owner is profiting $1,700 or almost 50%? Nope, not off Sillie's back. And particularly not when I have some bros who love me since I buy them pizza and beers that day.

To pull weeds, trim some bushes, and throw down some mulch. Hell I've done it for free a million times when I was younger and less lazy. Oh and I forgot to mention my Medello bros also plant a bunch of banana trees for me. This dude wants more to do that.

Number Juan landscaping has NO overhead pays no taxes and if anything gets damaged no insurance. Will be willing to bet he also pays his cousins next to nothing but it’s daily cash so they do it.

Oh and you probably heard about Juan from a friend because he puts no money into advertising other than the stickers on his truck.

That’s why there is such a difference.

I need to do this myself and i was thinking of using a legit company.
Thanks for the warning, jzus kryst, 4 times the price, no bueno!
I will do some of it myself and call a friends "guy" and have him do the things that my equipment won't reach.

Sounds like that company has more than enough business lined up and was giving you a 'Go away, I'm too busy' price.

I know a lot of guys dismiss landscaping companies as just a bunch of low tier tradies, but there are legit college courses/degrees for this field. There are a lot of multi-million dollar operations in play that only do landscaping. There are plenty of businesses and individuals that'll pay 100K or more for a landscaping job.

I was at a property awhile back and the owner payed 1.2 million to have his property landscaped and he pays 80K per year to have the grounds maintained. This is a private residence. Its about a 60 hour per week job to keep the property up. Which is 40 acres.

Most likely scenario is the owner doesn't want to waste his time with a small job. Stick to the Mexicans and buy them a couple of sixers for good will/as a tip.

Rocks and mulch just fly there magically. Trucks arent free. Gas isn't free. D plates and heavier are thousands yearly. Insurance on machinery, corporate liability insurance. Payroll insurance.

I could go on and on.

Not saying you can't find cheaper than 5500, but the dollar isn't worth **** and working a 6 man crew for less than a couple Gs of profit is asking for disaster.

You also don't have some bros who will come do it for pizzas.

Not sure about USA but in Australia he would also have to pay
Business Insurance
Workers compensation premiums
Vehicle maintenance, fuel, loans
Tool maintenance, saving for new tools
GST (10%)
Super (10%)
Pay workers for down time, holiday, sick leave
Pay or allow time for accountants, book work, advertising

So a gross 50% margin can quickly turn into more like a 15 or 20% net profit margin
