MISC beat battle thread #8
Welcome to the 8th edition of the infamous MISC Beat Battles!
The track selected for this battle is a song from a New Zealand band 'Golden Harvest' called I Need Your Love (1978). I recorded this raw off an old compilation record so there will be snap, crackle and POP.

Link to track -
As always, the rules are pretty lax - Use the sample somewhere in the mix, add your own drums, bassline, extra sparkle etc, and have fun.
All new-commers welcome, I look forward to hearing what you come up with!

It's a beat battle so we use that track, and remix it into something else. But yes, if you want to rap or sing vocaroo it and we can use it in our mix. No background music pls

What ive done is sampled it twice. first with the highs and mids cut and chopped it on the kick, and then with all the lows cut and chopped it on the snare. but i think its too muddy does that make sense?

Do you want to pick a sample and start the next thread? I dont think you've had a turn.

What sample are you layering with the kick and with the snare? I'm not sure I fully understand the problem.
As a general rule of thumb, you want to cut the bass frequencies on both of those samples, otherwise they'll clash with the kick's bass frequencies, unless you're doing sidechain compression. As for the snare, there shouldn't really be any issues with mid/high frequencies clashing, as long as you've got some headroom on the overall mix (aka, you're not pushing the gain into the red).
The fact you say the mix is muddy leads me to believe the issue is in the lower end of the frequency spectrum, so try to clean up everything below around 200hz and make sure there aren't any obvious clashes between different instruments/samples in that range. (The plugin I recommended to Pengh - Voxengo SPAN - is incredibly useful for this)
The kick and bass should occupy the lower end of the frequency spectrum, so anything else needs to have the low frequencies cut off completely below around 100-150hz. I'd also cut the kick's frequencies below 70hz to leave room for the bass.
You can also do it the other way around and cut below 70hz on the bass and no cuts on the kick, depending on which of the two you want to occupy the main bass frequencies. Sidechain compression solves the bass+kick clash issue, because it instructs the compressor to momentarily lower the volume of the bass when the kick plays, leaving room for it to come through.

Here's my submission guys. Went back to my Drum n Bass roots for this one, hope you like it.
My advice is to listen to it on some decent speakers or headphones, to catch the full impact of the low end.

As far as I can tell, there's no part in the original song where you have an isolated kick, snare or bass.NOT MY BEAT - just some thoughts
The technique you're using (trying to isolate the frequency of each instrument), is the best/only method for what you're trying to do. You'll have mixed results, it's quite complex to do something like that and actually manage to perfectly isolate the sound you want just by EQing out frequencies.
What you could do to mitigate that, while still retaining some of the original sound, is to layer additional samples on top. For example - you sample the snare from the original track using your frequency isolation/EQ method, then you layer a clean snare (from a sample pack or something) on top of it. Play with the volume levels of each one to make a nice compact, layered snare. That way you still get the original sound, but with a clean sample on top that tightens up the whole sound and gives it some colour.
You can do the same for the other parts you're trying to sample (kick/bass).
Just an idea, although I'm sure whatever method you end up using, your beat will sound awesome as always.
Oh, and thanks man! Glad you liked my beat.

Personally, I might have mixed the bass a little further back, to allow the kick to come through more, or even just raise the volume of the kick by a couple of dBs (depending on how much headroom you have left) but that's just a question of preference. The track definitely works well as it is. It has that dirty, old school, slightly lo-fi hip hop sound you mentioned in your vocaroo.
The way you can tell the mix is fine, is that in your second version with the acappella, the vocals mix well with the instrumental. Nothing sounds out of place.

I love what i do, and how it sounds but i would also love to be able to make a crystal clean mix like you and pengh do. I am building a eurorack set up atm which is just raw analog frequencies so i need to learn more about mixing lol. Sorry for all the noob questions

Mirin that you're going down the analog route with the Eurorack. I have a lot of appreciation for analog gear. I used to have a mainly analog setup back in the day and while digital has its enormous advantages in convenience and practicality, analog gear definitely adds that special something.
I'm actually thinking of adding back a few bits of analog gear to my setup, specifically a TC Electronic Finalizer Plus to give my final mixes that extra push in volume, width and dynamics. I can achieve pretty much the same thing with plugins, but the Finalizer is just a really nice piece of equipment that saves you a lot of time and gives surprisingly professional results with minimal effort.
Maybe in the future you could invest in a simple audio interface and DAW and have a hybrid digital/analog setup that allows you get the best of both worlds.
Any advice you ever need on gear or techniques, don't hesitate to hit me up.

Tbh, I was a bit worried no one would understand what the hell they were listening to. Outside of Europe, DnB isn't exactly one of the most well known EDM genres. Really glad you liked it. And lol, that's exactly what I was going for - "Here's some Hip Hop. JK, Surprise! DnB"
Mirin that you used to DJ DnB, it sucks that your gear got stolen... Around 2001 you were probably mixing the classics from Metalheadz, Virus, Ram, Renegade Hardware, Bad Company etc. Epic. That was definitely the golden age of DnB.
I still have so many vinyls from that era. I'm quite good friends with some of the old school DJs/producers like Keaton (Usual Suspects), Dom (Dom&Roland), Ed Rush & Optical and others. Keaton especially taught me pretty much everything I know about DnB production. DnB was a massive part of my life.
I don't know if you've heard of the London-based Hip Hop group "Foreign Beggars", but the MC (Pavan, aka MC Drop) used to be a DnB MC and we played a few gigs together. Good times.
