VPN Users Risk 20-Year Jail Sentences in the US Under New RESTRICT Act

A bill dubbed the ‘RESTRICT’ act that was submitted to Congress could have severe consequences for virtual private network (VPN) users in the United States.

U.S. lawmakers are widening their sights when it comes to cracking down on finance and technology.

The bipartisan “Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT)” act was unveiled in early March.

It was initially dubbed the “TikTok Ban Bill,” but has far wider ramifications. Furthermore, VPN users could face hefty fines or jail sentences under the bill.

People often legitimately use VPN (virtual private network) services to add an extra layer of security for web communications. Furthermore, they allow users to mask or change their internet address. This is often required to access content that may otherwise be blocked or censored.

The bill, if passed, would attempt to identify “information and communications technology products and services holdings that pose undue or unacceptable risks.”

This could include VPNs if they are used to access banned websites such as TikTok.

The bill specifically directs the Secretary of Commerce to “identify, deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit, investigate, or otherwise mitigate” national security risks associated with technology linked to countries adversarial to the U.S.

The bill also has a long list of communications technologies it intends to scrutinize. These include web hosting, cloud services, content delivery services, drones, payment applications, gaming applications, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce.

The scary part is the potential punishment for violators. This includes fines of up to a million dollars or 20 years in jail, or both.

If tik tok is a banned application and you use a VPN to use it for your incel needs then you deserve a harsh punishment, Id prefer public whipping to be honest.

Uh oh... Bad news for wincel.

Jokes aside, this isn't going to just be used to block you from accessing tik tok.

Miscers are idiots.

20 years in jail and 200k fine because you used a VPN to access news from "banned" countries.

China is on that list btw.

I guess Netflix, Youtube have deeper pockets to bribe congress than does Nord VPN and tik tok.

The tik tok ban is probably because Google and META want to be the only ones allowed to spy on you and sell your data. Because seriously, how is China having the browsing habits of some retarded teenagers a threat to national security? I mean Google is just going to sell it to China anyway.

I get the influence argument as a threat, but again, is tik tok any more of a dangerous influence than Youtube can be?

This could include VPNs if they are used to access banned websites such as TikTok.
This is like saying they are trying to ban people from driving cars....

All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

Agreed. All they had to do was ban a single app, but wound up creating another Trojan Horse bill that could bring the whole country down because politicians across the aisle are greedy, power hungry, myopic, and totally oblivious as to how technology works.

The caveat is what theycouldinclude as banned applications or websites.

That potential is where the heavy 1984 concerns lie. A proper privacy law could have easily accomplished similar, if not outright better protections for all Americans, but then they wouldn't have a treasure trove of US spying applications like ******** and Twitter to do their deeds for them while circumventing the constitution.

Of course. Evil people can't focus on one thing, they add all sorts of unrelated things in there too so there is no such thing as privacy. I wonder how they can know I'm use a VPN, since that's part of the point of them. I used to use VPN but stopped for awhile. On a somewhat related note after I stopped using a VPN I got a letter from AT&T warning me for downloading an episode of 'Better Call Saul' from a popular torrent site. No doubt the feds are intent on fining people for torrents if this becomes law. Squeeze that money out of people. I hope the people warning about this are exaggerating. More than likely the wording is very vague so it's one of those things where the feds could go after us, but are unlikely to do so.

You do realize that tiktok isn't going to be the only thing on that list and it's gonna become a hot mess really quickly with corrupt politicians banning more and more chit.
